Stay away from Julia Travel! We paid for the Walking Tour of Historic Mexico City and got left without a tour and no refund. A week prior to my trip to Mexico I e-mailed all of the tour companies that I reserved a tour with (Julia Travel being one of three). NEVER received a response to my e-mail. I didn't think much of it so I didn't cancel. On the day of this tour, I called the two phone numbers for Julia Travel and got no answer or reply, not even an option to leave a message. So we went to the meet up spot for this tour anyway but no tour guide ever showed up. I then began calling Julia Travel again and again, sending Whatsapp messages too. Nothing. I put in a refund request to Expedia (the website I used to book the tour) and my refund request was denied. I paid $68 for a tour for two and got left high and dry. STAY AWAY!!!

This was a great tour that took the stress out of travelling from the center of CDMX to Teotihuacan and accessing the site and local area. The tourbus can pick you up at several locations (National Auditorium, Zocalo, etc); I ended up in a group of four with a great bilingual guide, Manuel, who was quite knowledgeable about the areas we travelled through while on the way to the pyramids. Our first stop was to an obsidian and silver workshop where we were entertained by Jesus ("follow Jesus"!) and educated on the importance of obsidian and agave to the region and their role in the construction of the complex. We then spent about 1:45 walking around Teotihuacan (the pyramid steps were closed so no climbing to the top this time) and talking to the local vendors that were selling wares in the complex. We then travelled to a local restaurant/event hall for lunch--the food was ok (think refried beans with mashed potatoes), but the mariachi band and "indigenous" dancers that performed while we ate gave me the feeling of being in Disneyworld, and not in a good way (it was definitely for tourist groups). The last part of the trip was a visit to the Basilica de Guadalupe, which could have taken up a whole other afternoon. Overall, I enjoyed this tour; the workshop and pyramids were incredible, our guide was great, but the Basilica visit could have been longer. The one part I would skip is the restaurant, as I would have preferred the street food.

4. Madness in San Miguel de Allende

Rehiletes

We will take a tour of downtown San Miguel de Allende; where the cobbled streets and surrounded by colorful houses create the environment you need to clear your mind and transport you to the past. Another attraction that we will visit is the Museum of La Esquina. Here, toys from the different regions of Mexico are exhibited and some artisan pieces worth knowing. Later we will bring out our inner madness in the parade of madmen where people take to the streets with golozinas and exotic costumes being one of the parades expected throughout the year. At nightfall, we will delight the palate with exquisite churros in the San Agustín cafeteria.

Inclusions: 1 day trip, Boxlunch (optional), Transportation by luxury bus or sprinter van, Hot springs in ”La gruta”, Tour of San Miguel de Allende, Food (optional), Visit at the Toy Museum, Presence or participation of the Crazy Parade, Churros with Chocolate in San Agustín cafeteria, Trained guides and group entertainers, Insurance on board the unit and travel assistance insurance

Every part of the trip was planned to the smalest of the detail and went smootly. Not a single problem. We visited several places that normally you do not visit in a regular trip because this tour operator knows the places, the culture, the locals, the food, arts and crafts where you participate in the making of local art objects and interact with the local people, not only visit the places. The guides are with you at all times, are very knowledgeable and helpfull and know every inch of the tour. You feel very secure with them. The best experience in an organized tour I have ever had.

5. Magic town Malinalco

Get to know and practice the Mexican art of families through its workshops on pre-Hispanic instruments and colored textiles. "A trip to the past is the proud rescue of the present."

Inclusions: 1 day trip, Boxlunch (optional), Transportation by luxury bus or Sprinter van, Visit to the Archaeological Zone, Food (optional), Rebozos Workshop, Visit to the Ex-Convent San Agustino, Tour of Malinalco, Pre-Hispanic Instruments Workshop, Destination guide and group drivers, Insurance on board the unit and travel assistance insurance
