Top 7 History Museums in Zagreb, Central Croatia

July 9, 2021 Vivienne Hutton

Zagreb got its start as two medieval fortress towns atop hills overlooking the Sava River, and was reborn in the Baroque period as center of business, perfectly located on routes connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea. These days, Zagreb is the heart of contemporary Croatia’s culture, art, sports, and academics, but its history is not forgotten. The unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, open-air markets, and ancient cathedrals, make Zagreb the perfect city to explore.

Excellent displays which were in English and Croatian made visiting this amazing museum a pleasure. The well organized layout, uncluttered display of artifacts and well lit rooms made the tour of the building an easy and educational stop for an afternoon.

It took us about 30 minutes to check everything out, it can take a bit more if you really want to go in deep. Most of the exhibits are outside so you can get a feel for them. The information you get from the tablets is very thorough and the whole mood in the museum does get to your nerves after a while. Not huge on souvenirs myself, but they could really expand their selection if they managed to get some more specific ones, i.e. a tiny model guillotine or iron maiden.
