Top 7 Historic Walking Areas in Downtown Manhattan (Downtown), New York (NY)

January 23, 2022 Emerita Lamoureux

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

World Trade Center Memorial Foundation

This is a must see on your visit to NYC. It was raining on the day that we visited but it is majestic and moving in any weather conditions. Make sure you check out the Survivor Tree - the Pyrus tree that survived 9/11 - very awe inspiring. Looking forward to seeing the memorial again on our next visit, but this time lit up at night.

Stonewall National Monument

Stonewall National Monument is a new national park unit located in Christopher Park, part of New York City's Historic Greenwich Village. It is a park in progress with limited services, and in the coming years services will be added to the park in cooperation with our partners. The Stonewall Inn, a bar located in Greenwich Village, New York City and the immediate area was the scene of events that began the modern struggle for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans.

My wife and I, along with our friend who is a gay man, deeply enjoyed this place. He had been here before it was made into a National Monument but was very happy to see it again. As a young lesbian growing up in Oklahoma, I never thought I would see something like Stonewall. It was deeply moving and very serene. Highly Recommended to anyone but especially those who are LGBTQ+ because this is where our rights started.

This experience is NOT "your dad's Buick"! A "tour of Mid-Town and Times Square (by dark) is not an, "on your left is.. and on your right is..".. This "in your face" comedy / educational / What the??. experience combining live comedians (2) continually ad-libing our way around Manhattan and are joined by "Street Performers" for our entertainment. I'm not sure if the "non-proficient English speaking" tourists were able to keep up with the patter and subtleties but they certainly laughed, clapped and buggied along with the rest of us! As a professional travel agent, (40+ years experience), I've been on plenty of scenic, informational, sightseeing bus tours, but this is definitely something out of the ordinary! good fun for all and for all ages!
