White Desert

Covering more than 2.8 million square kilometers, this vast desert starts at the western banks of the Nile and continues into Libya and contains five isolated, but thriving, oases: Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariyya and Siwa. There are magnificent rock formations that form from wind erosions. The colors change at times from the sun, a beautiful sight to see.

The White Desert is huge. Hire a driver and explore. It is a long drive from Cairo, so takes 6 hours or so depending on how many stops you make. Make sure you make all the stops along the way (your driver will know them all). Crystal mountain is along the way where there is quartz and it is quite a lovely view along the way. I also managed to see the white desert chalk rock formations the same afternoon before sunset too. These are quite cool and there are some popular shapes such as the chicken and mushroom and the rabbit. The chicken and mushroom have a fencing around them now to avoid people damaging them. At sunset you can get some great photos and views. My 4x4 driver also doubled up as a cook and had equipment for camping overnight in a tent. I know some people have said it is nice to see the stars and sleep without a tent... keep an eye on weather. When I was there, it was very very cold and windy at night and I had a sleeping bag and a heavy blanket on top of me and it was still cold and if I didn’t have the tent to separate me from the wind a little I am not sure I would have been able to cope! It is nice to wake up just before sunrise and walk about. You might see footprints of other birds / animals about. It’s the desert. No toilets! Also be sure to get to the black desert and there is a little hike up to get a great view of the black desert landscape. There are other tourists that go and camp here but not so many that it can be off the beaten track as most people probably cannot be bothered to travel from Cairo and / or pay the price for a driver and 4x4 etc. A small group is better to split the cost / make it more worthwhile.

I discovered a magical place in Egypt: the White Desert! Never thought that such a place like this existed in this world! The snow-white desert is actually made of chalk that has been exposed for years to what geologists call "differential weathering," the erosion of soft particles that results in eerie protrusions of hard rock. These mushrooms shaped rock formations are ten to fifteen feet tall. And I found other shapes such as a rabbit, a sphynx, faces and much more! 75 million years ago, sea used to cover this place so we can also find fossils of shells. But this place has been engraved into my heart not only because of its natural beauty but thanks to the wonderful and very professional guide MOHAMED KOTABY with whom I went with! As a Bedouin, he knows every inch of the desert, its origin and history since it is his home. But more than that, he transmits you his love, passion and understanding of this place. I've heard the sound of silence and I felt an inner peace as never before. This journey was an initiatory one. I found a spiritual connection which allowed my to meditate over several issues and problems and I came back feeling 10 years younger. Mohamed made me feel so comfortable and at ease even if we were alone. I slept one night in this amazing desert and as a female, with some worries about traveling alone in the company of a man in an country such as Egypt, I've always felt protected. He prepares a Bedouin camp and cooks wonderfully (traditional Bedouin food). We travelled with a four-wheel drive but we can also do it my camel. Of course, in this case it will take longer. I only regret my short stay and that's why I will come back next year but this time to spend more time in this breathtaking place and, of course, with my exceptional and favorite guide, Mohamed Kotaby whom I thank so much from the bottom of my heart.

Cristal Mountain

Reviewed By Nakiboy13 - Cairo, Egypt

When I mentioned to my 3 kids that we’d likely visit a place in the desert called Crystal Mountain they were all so excited and I was sure that the actual place would fall short of their expectations. It didn’t. The sparkling quartz had the kids frothing at the mouth and they all pretended to be treasure hunters. We discovered that it’s not just the one mountain that contains the ‘crystals’, the surrounding area proved thrilling to explore too.
