Stopped off at the church by chance on way to the abbey and we’re glad we did as it was a most interesting place which should not be missed. The enclosed pews of various shapes and sizes and status fill the ground floor and balcony which overlook a three tier pulpit. Most unusual and fascinating. Some of the upstairs pews have external timber clad stairs adding to it’s uniqueness. Finally the surrounding graveyard offers fine views of the harbour.

A beautiful church with wonderful views across Whitby. A long walk up but well worth the effort Some really old graves

The St Mary's Church, Scarborough is where Anne Bronte sleeps. Scarborough was her favourite seaside town, and that's where Charlotte brought her in May to lift her spirits and improve her health. But, alas, Anne flew away just 4 days later. Charlotte had been so anguished that the headstone reads the year of Anne's birth incorrectly. The Bronte Society installed a new stone in 2011 and corrected the error. Well, Anne certainly has a wonderful view over the South Bay, and the resting place is perfect for spending eternity. The church is beautiful, and its flowering gardens are exquisite. The garden of memories is very poignant. The yellow roses are lovely but sad. It was like a pilgrimage for me.

This is an absolutely beautiful church and well worth visiting if you are in Whitby. Outstanding stained glass, it's like a mini-cathedral.

We were walking a loop from Sandsend; through Mulgrave Woods to Mulgrave Castle and then around to join the Cleveland Way so we could walk the Geocache Art Trail - which is fab! (reviewed separately) We were walking nearby to St Oswald Church and it is so picturesque that we decided to walk closer and have a look. The church was so photogenic underneath a beautiful blue sky and we enjoyed wandering around the old gravestones. The graveyard has great views out to sea and several benches to sit and meditate. This church is located right on the main road from Whitby, just before Sandsend. There is free parking available in the lane just before the church, then it is a short 1 minute walk to the church gates. It is only now that I have read about the church being repaired using old Viking gravestone, so I regret not having gone inside. Will definitely pop in next time we're back in this area.
