This was one of my favorite restaurants when I first moved to the area in 2000. In the past 3-4 years, the prices have gone up, the portion size has gone down (my to go order containers are now half full instead of full), they count the number of shrimp you get in a dish and they have fallen to the standard of box restaurants of pouring on the salt. The dishes they make have wonderful and complex flavors, but now all I taste is salt. I wake up in the middle of the night needing to drink water. Their solution when you bring this to their attention is this: next time order each dish and say no or low sodium or salt.Itâs truly sad. This was one of my favorite restaurants to bring family, friends, and sometimes tour groups. Now I only go when I have a huge craving for Ghan Shao Lamb or Prawns a la Ching Hua.If they decide to listen to the public and increase their portion size ( Iâm fine with paying higher prices for quality), and reduce the sodium I would be happy to return and bring everyone with me!Please bring back the old Kirin!

Great China reopened at 2190 Bancroft Way on the corner of Oxford in Berkeley two years after a fire destroyed their Kittredge St. location in 2012. It is only a block away from the original restaurant and has a more contemporary feeling without the crowded tables or any stairs that the original building had.The menu is similar to the original with many of the popular items still available. We often order the Double Skin and Peking Duck..... both are recommended. Other selections that we have tried are very good to excellent.Service is usually very good and attentive. The restaurant is well maintained and clean. It is a James Beard Outstanding Wine Program Nominee and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. This restaurant is one of our favorites in the East Bay... we sometimes travel from the South Bay just to eat at this restaurant.
I took a couple of my friends for lunch here to celebrate a birthday. It opened recently and so has new furnishings. The service is a little slow but polite and helpful. My friends did not want spicy so with the serverâs help, we ordered a steamed fish head and flounder which came in a sauce of many vegetables and sliced meat, fried glutinous rice balls, and fried potatoes on a griddle. The fish was very fresh and nicely cooked. The potatoes were like potato chips in a savory sauce. Both dishes were kept warm on heating griddled. The glutinous rice balls were filled with red bean paste which was sweet. I thought the food was very well cooked. I will return to try their more typical Hunan spicy dishes.

I went for the local organic food, but besides the brown rice was not impressed. Took ages to get noticed and seated during lunch (place was 1/2 full), and ages for main meal, although soup and tea came quickly. The lunch special is a deal at $10 for soup, tea, appetizer and main. I ordered a veggie appetizer and shrimp Szechuan main. I hadnât expected flour coated, fried shrimp - the coating was soggy in the sauce and not pleasant. Appetizer was served on same plate and greasy fro oil. Some lettuce garnished the plate but seemed out of place. The sauces left a nasty taste in my mouth that lingered long after the meal. Iâd try a dinner menu with organic chicken next time, this mealâs choices were not what Iâd hoped for. Background music is classical and the toilets are clean.

Peking duck, âDouble skin,â seafood soup - simply delicious, amazing food. Iâve never had Chinese food like this before. Flavorful, fresh, and light. My friends told me about this place a long time ago, and I finally got to go with them. They went early to stand in line before 5 pm, when they open for dinner (Saturday; they donât take reservations for small groups). We got a table, and we (well, they) ordered quickly - and the food was ready quickly too. Very efficient service. But the food is the highlight - simply wow. Beautiful space too - modern and spare. Full bar.

We ordered the seafood ramen stir fried. Loaded with shrimp, calamari, fish and pea pods. The noodles were perfectly cooked and fried with a very flavorful. We also ordered a seafood soup. It had a lot of noodles and shrimp but lacked flavor. You had to add soy sauce to enhance it. Prices average and service good.Thank you for taking the time to review our restaurant. We truly appreciate your kind support. By the way, there is our home made chili sauce on eveytsble that is commonly used to spice up the Canton Seafood noodle bowl too. Thanks again

Youâll never think youâre eating in Cheng Du, but for the US this represents authentic Szechuan pretty well. Avoid the old-standby recipes and familiar lunch plates and order something you donât recognize â especially if your server tries to talk you out of it! Wonderful vegetarian dishes include my favorites like fish-fragrance eggplant. Spicing is often a bit on the mild side â if you want to be authentic, speak up.
