Do yourself a favour and locate the village of Oberwuchel (near the slightly larger village of Grafenstein), about 20 minutes drive from the state capital of Klagenfurt, and perhaps 45 minutes from the salubrious resort town of Velden at lake Woerthersee.Exit the motorway from Graz / Vienna at exit Grafenstein, but pay attention. blink and you miss this tiny hamlet that is home to probably the best restaurant in Kaernten (Carinthia), Austria's southernmost state, east of Woerthersee, all the way out of the state. The respected restaurant guide, Gault & Millau (the less snobby competition to the Guide Michelin) , is full of praise for the restaurant and scores it 16/20, which is no mean feat.Whenever I am int his part of Austria, I try to book a table, and this time I was luck to score a table the first day after the owner's return from post summer season vacation. Our party opted for the 5-course set menu with wine matching, and we enjoyed the evening immensely.Whilst, according to chef-owner Roman, the lunch menu features "simple" Hausmannskost (local home-style cuisine), the evening menu celebrates the best of local and seasonal ingredients. EVERYTHING, from the table salt, butter and olive oil, to the smallest ingredient on the plates has a story and provenance. Hostess-owner Anja-Margaretha Moritz tells you where your meat comes from, from which farmer's garden the carrots originate and from which brook or lake the fish is from. She probably could show you baby pictures of the cow who gave her milk for the butter. We did not bother to look at the wine list this time, as Mrs. Moritz selected some wonderful bottles for us. Something Austrian, something Italian, a bit of French and a few selected local spirits to get us started. The food is sensational. Intelligent cooking, artful presentation (with, thankfully not a single "smear" or "skid mark" of sauce on the plates) and delicious flavours. The food comes in a leisurely pace and the service is charming and top notch. This is NOT a place for a quick in-and-out meal (at least not in the evening). This is a restaurant to linger and enjoy food, wine and service.Of course this is not cheap, but in my opinion, worth every Cent. A special occasion restaurant and worth the detour or a special trip from further afield. And what is astounding is, that Roman and Anja run this by themselves. Just the two of them!

GroÃe Auswahl an sehr leckeren, typisch österreichischen Gerichten.

Hungry, Sunday and evening seemed to be in this region in winter a unhappy combination. By chance we found the Stubn (cosy room) and have been quite surprised. Quite some international oriented local dishes on offer we could not resist to go with the Heringschmaus (local gold fish dish during carnival time) and the tagliatelle with salmon. We had lambs-leaf salad with potato chips (quite unusual but good) and for the kids we ordered noodles with tomato sauce. Unfortunately it did not come just plain as to be expected for little kids but with onions, veggies and quite spicy. As the kids refused to eat this dish the found they delight with the salmon-dill noodles.Pudding was kindly offered but nothing what we really liked. So we asked for a Sabayon and they really made one. It would not win the michelin star awards but was still very agreeable and we enjoyed it a lot. Their Glühwein is quite good as well. The only downside was they the charged the sent-back kids dishes in full. But as the service was excellent, unlike most of restaurants in this area they even offered a kids play corner, the food a delight and they really tried hard we thought why fight for a tenner? I can fully recommend this place for a good and honest meal and would go there back at any time.
