Things to do in Tortuguero
The perfect option to take a break while waiting for the Public Boat Transportation Service to Tortuguero. We also have a Private Parking Service for your vehicle, Private Boat Transport Service, Restaurant Service, Bar and Minisuper.
Really unsympathetic, overpriced place (e.g. water cost 1500 colons, normmaly 1000 colons). WC costs 1 USD or 500 colons. Parking per day 10 USD.

At la Casona we had the most uninspired, blandest meal of all of central America. We didn't even ask for something complicated! We asked for casado with chicken in supposedly coconut sauce, what we got were two mummified pieces of unflavoured chicken leg with dry rice and microwaved beans. And for the "cheap" price of $10 a head!Utterly unimpressed...If you want to see how it should be done, go next door to Miss Miriam's. You won't regret it!

We had prawns cooked in garlic, therefore, just a bit more than just fried, and a mixed salad each. Price was over 25.000 colones ( more than 41.000$). We ate the same thing in other places and it was far more affordable.

We ordered the Caribbean Chicken (a local speciality) and were so disappointed with our meal. The chicken itself was tasteless - it had been boiled in water and completely lost its flavour. The dish was made up of rice and beans, a salad and fried plantains - all of which were also completely tasteless. The whole plate was swimming in water - either stock from the chicken or more likely just the water used to wash the salad - and the plantain were soggy, brown and just generally not well prepared. As we're backpacking we're usually happy to eat in less expensive places and we don't expect perfect food. Sunrise, however, is not a cheap restaurant by Costa Rican standards and - given that we've been eating typical Central American food for the last 5 months - we can tell when it's just not up to standard. We left our food after a few bites, and were presented with the full bill and no apology in response to our complaint. There are much better and cheaper places to eat in Tortuguero - avoid this one.

I loved this restaurant. It's right in the center of everything first of all. Also, the owner and staff are very very friendly. They are always willing to chat and get to know you. Not to mention that the food is delicious and prepared fresh.

Sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the rivers of Tortuguero is Miss Junie's Lodge. We were welcomed with complementary cocktails which was welcomed after our long and hot journey. The grounds and gardens in which the lodge is set are teaming with wildlife; it is not a rare sight to see great green macaws flying overhead! Our hosts arranged a canal tour for just us which was fantastic and so informative, we saw lots of wildlife including the American Pigmy Kingfisher and the Chestnut Breasted Heron, which we were told are very rare sights. Our tour guide also gave us lots of information about the history of Tortuguero. We were very grateful for the pool at our accommodation as the sea is not safe to swim in, it was a nice break from the beaming sun. Our cabin was very clean and well presented each day, with a fan and bug screens. We would definitely recommend staying here if visiting Tortuguero because of the great location, lovely hosts and delicious breakfasts!

Great food place in Tortuguero. Serves a few variations of the typical casado with your choice of meat.
Typical local Caribbean food, you basically choose the casados with chicken (4,000 CRC), stake, shrimp or fish. The fruit shakes (we had pineapple) were great and affordable (1,000 CRC). The interior was as already mentioned on here quite basic but the two tables outside were good enough for us. We ate more Caribbean food around Costa Rica and this was our favourite!
