While the unimaginative (or, ok, the hungry) queue across the street for the 80's style comfort food of The Pantry, a small and maybe hipper crowd enjoys the best coffee on offer in the city at the Coffee Pedaler. This is the only place in New haven that comes close to emulating the sophisticated approach to coffee that can often be found in Brooklyn or occasionally in Manhattan (or most places in Australia). Espresso is the mainstay but pour-over is also a specialty. Food is limited but the specialty is Montreal style bagels, which are delicious.

The Book Trader Cafe offers a range of delicious gourmet sandwiches, coffees, and homemade soups & pastries as well as gently used, conservatively priced books for the general or academic reader. Vegan & gluten-free options are available daily.
Book Trader has a decent gluten free menu. I had a sandwich with gluten free bread, which was tasty (you know, sometimes gf bread tastes like cardboard!). The staff behind the counter is very helpful & friendly. You can sit outside in nicer weather, or inside. Sometimes it hard to find a seat because people hang around with their laptops, or their friends! There is one room of used books to mosey thru and purchase if you find something you like. Its a lot of books in a pretty tight space!

We had both the choupette and smoked salmon savory crepes which were outstanding as well as a lemon dessert crepe. Excellent cappuccino. Highly recommend.

If you go to Bellaâs for breakfast on a Sunday morning, expect to wait. The place recalls Yogi Berraâs famous quip about Toots Shorâs Restaurant in Manhattan: âNobody goes there anymore. Itâs too crowded.â When you get inside, itâs a fairly safe bet youâll also feel a little cramped. But nobody who goes to Bellaâs goes to be seated quickly or to dine in the lap of luxury. Everybody who goes there goes for the food.It doesnât matter what you order. Itâll be great, and youâll leave stuffed. The coffee is so good, I asked our waitress what it was. She told us itâs Jimâs Costa Rican blend. I donât know who Jim is, but he knows his way around a cup oâ Joe. And Bellaâs knows its way around a killer breakfast.

Popped into Claireâs for a quick bite of lunch before taking a campus tour. There were plenty of options and we each had something different - however our younger teenage son was not too impressed with the vegetarian burger!Great atmosphere and plenty of tables, with customer toilets on site.

For over 40 years Atticus Bookstore Cafe has been supporting a more connected and thoughtful New Haven. We offer comforting cafe fare and naturally-leavened breads featuring regional ingredients, and an evolving curation of books and gifts.
Average breakfast (variety, ingredients, preparation, presentation and taste) with average service at average value near main Yale campus. Would I dine here again? Probably not. Would I recommend it to others? Yes, if you want something more substantial than Starbucks (nearby) but don't want to walk around for other places.
