Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Kríti ['kriti]; Ancient Greek: Κρήτη, Krḗtē) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.

I have to admit I didn't choose this company, and was booked for me by the hotel I was staying. However I was certainly happy with the choice. I was doing the trip to do the Samaria Gorge hike. The pickup was an early one at 6am, and the bus turned up exactly on time. The bus itself was modern and comfortable and made for a pleasant journey. Not far from the gorge we stopped at a taverna where it is possible to buy coffee ( instant ) and some breakfast. There weren't many options with things like sandwiches on offer. Shortly after we drove the last little way to the gorge itself. Our guide Orestis went and got the tickets for us, gave us some instructions and sent us on our way ( he did also offer walking sticks to rent if you want them, I didn't use any ). The walk itself isn't too difficult but is certainly rocky with many uneven surfaces. I would highly recommend wearing good hiking shoes with decent grip. Although there were people in other groups wearing sandals.... I'm not sure how they got along!! Perhaps due to the COVID situation the park was not too busy, and aside from a rowdy group who started at the same time it was pretty peaceful. Everyone is allowed to walk at their own place and everyone went off on their own. Personally I tried to get away from the rowdy group as quickly as possible. There are some amazing views along the way, so although you REALLY need to watch where you out your feet don't forget to look up from time to time!! Along the way there are a couple of designated rest areas with seating and a water fountain with fresh water readily available. There are also toilets at these locations. The trail is easy enough to follow, although there are some points where you need to be careful as you cross the ( dry ) river. So you just have rocks so it's harder to see the trail. However I always quickly found the way to go. There are also a few points with small wooden bridges which were stable to cross. Exiting the park you still need to go another couple of Kms to the village of Agia Roumeli. There were also signs about a bus that will take you that distance for €2, but I didn't use this. The village has several restaurants/cafes where you can get food and drink. Along with two beaches, one sand one stone. The sand beach also has sunchairs/umbrellas you can rent if you wish. Orestis the guide purposely did the hike delayed in order to pick up and assist any stragglers or anyone with issues. Eventually we met him at a designated taverna where he provided us our ferry tickets and instructions on which Ferry to get. Getting off the ferry was easy and another short walk ( incase you haven't walked enough ???????? ) we found the bus. Which took us back to Chania. The drive itself also has awesome views so worth trying to stay awake! All in all a well organised day and much enjoyed.... Even if my feet did not!! ????
