Vallejo (/vəˈleɪ(h)oʊ/ və-LAY-(h)oh; Spanish: [baˈʎexo]) is a waterfront city in Solano County, California, located in the North Bay sub-region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Vallejo is geographically the closest North Bay city to the inner East Bay, so it is sometimes mistakenly associated with that region. The population was 115,942 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the largest in Solano County. Vallejo sits on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay, 30 miles north of San Francisco, the northwestern shore of the Carquinez Strait and the southern end of the Napa River, 15 miles south of Napa. The city is named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a native Californio, leading proponent of California's statehood, and one of the first members of the California State Senate; the neighboring city of Benicia is named for his wife, Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo.

Mare Island was the first Naval Base on the West Coast, opening in 1854. Beatiful Historic properties with National Landmark Status. Museum building opened in 1855. 2-Mansions in 1900, and 1901 Chapel with the most Tiffany Stained Glass in the West. Properties available for Tours, Weddings, and many types of special events, such as Memorials, Funerals & Concerts. The properties are managed by the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation. (A non-profit established in 1995)
There's a lot to like about this museum. I wish we could have had a guide to explain things and answer our questions, but the exhibits are well designed for self guided tours. The most interesting exhibit by far is the control room of the USS Mariano G. Vallejo. Getting good photos in there is tricky because of the lighting and limited angles, but you can do pretty well if you're persistent.

Very popular way to commute or take a day trip to the city. Ferry is clean, crew is professional and friendly. Very dependable and always on time! What more can you ask for! Passengers are respectful and crew does not allow for children running on boat. Love taking my nap and in 60 minutes I am getting off at the ferry building.

This former military facility is now oen to the public.
The guided tour of Mare Island Naval Shipyard costs twenty bucks, and it's money well spent. The tour of St. Peter's Chapel is alone worth the price, but you get to tour a mansion and see historic Dry Dock #1, gantries, giant cranes and other attractions of Mare Island's historic core. Photography in the chapel is tricky because of the lighting, and the art glass windows and ceiling tiles are especially challenging. Take lots of photos and some are bound to turn out well.

I'm reading other reviews and it appears that no one bothered to speak to anyone who volunteers there. Sad on so many levels. The folks who work there are a fountain of information. We stopped by there by chance with our young adult children. We consider it to be the best part of our two week vacation in California. It's run down because they changed their policy and the volunteers aren't allowed to help with restorations because they are mostly seniors. If you are local, please volunteer and help maintain a wonderful bit of history. You can find actual footage of it during it's time of operation in the documentary about the Indianapolis. Make sure to visit the WWII Navy ship anchored at the dock. Take the time to schedule an appointment to visit the beautiful officers quarters . Read all of the daily accounts from life. There are logs, newspaper articles, so much history and a great learning experience. Much better that Disneyland, Universal Studios and such costly tourist traps.
