Don't come to this restaurant if you are looking for haute cuisine, in fact don't come to Teresopolis if you are looking for haute cuisine, as the city has little to offer in the way of half decent food. This restaurant is a long way out of town, at least a 20 minute drive from the centre, but if you are looking for some decent, if plain, food after the overpriced dross in Teresopolis itself, this will be a good option. Not sure if non Portuguese speaking tourists would find this place, but for Brazilian tourists it would be worth coming here. It is self service and gets very crowded at the weekends for lunch. As there is a good turnover the food is not left keeping warm for hours, which is the fault in many of this type of restaurant. After the self-service dishes their is a barbecue section which has some good meat to try. Again not sure how a non-Portuguese speaking person would manage to explain what they want to the person cutting the meat, but it is certainly worth the effort. The picanha (rump) and the contra filet (sirloin) are the best cuts of beef here and there is pork and chicken also to choose from. The atmosphere is very "family" orientated, relaxed and the service quick and simple. Prices are really pretty good by local standards. I, as a resident here, would doubt you could find a better place to eat, at any price, in a city so devoid of unpretentious eating places at reasonable cost.

Two words: Food poisoning.I went there once in 2010 and I promised never to return again.Let's face it. Teresopolis does not have good churrascarias. The only reasons why this restaurant seems to be well rated are: 1) People who usually go there have very low expectations; and/or 2) People who go there are tourists, who don't know the city and its restaurants, but since Novilho de Ouro is located right by the side of Teresopolis Fair (Feirinha do Alto), the city's main attraction, they think this place is hotspot. It isn't.

Varieta Grill

Reviewed By Arrastape

Teresopolis being a tourist destination that is an hour and half from Rio de Janeiro can boast of many quality self-service restaurants but Varieta stands out among them because of the variety of dishes they make available at all hours during lunch and dinner. Most places start to run out of choices when it closing time approaches but Varieta consistently resupplies the buffet table so that you don't feel like you are eating left-overs. Besides the large buffet dishes, there is also a section for freshly made sushi as well as a barbeque counter where you can order cuts of chicken, beef or pork in the portions according to your appetite. Upon entering, an attendant will hand the patron a plastic card will be used to keep tabs of what is consumed. After plating your food, go to the counter with the scales where they will weigh the food and scan the plastic card. After sitting down, a waiter will ask you for your beverage of choice, note the number on the plastic card. If you go for dessert, take the plate to the scale counter and present the plastic card. Coffee is complimentary. When done, take the plastic card to the cashier to pay for your meal.
