Things to do in Poggiardo

Every once in a while you come across something you consider special. My wife and I were touring around the local vicinity and came across La Cambusa. This is a family run bar come trattoria, headed up by Ruggero in front of house and his delightful wife Angela, the maestro in the kitchen. She is assisted by her mother who makes the most spectacular tomato passata, the basis of the very many homemade pastas on the menu. Before we visited we found some excellent reviews on TripAdvisor but they were all Italian, with one in Dutch and one in French; not one English review. So here is the first review in English. On our 1st visit (we ate here 3 times) Ruggero suggested the house Anti Pasti; well what a feast with 10 different tasting plates of various seafood and other local speciality dishes. Plenty for 2 and only â¬16! It was so filling and tasty we could eat no more. At the end of the meal with no room for desert Ruggero offered a choice of a digestivo, Limoncello and homemade grappa "on the house". Not just a small shot but left the bottles on the table to help yourself. We revisited for Sunday Lunch and again had a wonderful meal surrounded by locals and their families having a good time. On the last evening before leaving Puglia we returned and had a wonderful Sea-Bass baked in salt, which was cooked perfectly. Ruggero offer us a really great bottle of wine from "his family" as a gift. If you are looking for traditional, home cooked and extremely fresh ingredients then look no further. This is not a "tourist" place with pictures of the food to choose from. This is exactly what my wife and I like to find and enjoy when we travel around. There are good inexpensive house wines by the carafe, and also a varied choice of Pugliese wines. Not expensive since Italian restaurants do not mark up 3 x or more. Bring a BIG appetite with you and if there are 4 or more try the mixed grilled meat platter if you are into meat. All of the seafood is fresh and perfectly cooked. We just wish it was near where we live since it would be our regular "go to" place to eat.It is a bit of a hassle finding it because of all the one way streets in Cucomola, so Google Maps or a SatNav would be of great help. We hope that this review has enthused you to visit if you are in the area; you will not be sorry! Enjoy both the great hospitality and wonderfully prepared food as we did! We started as visiting tourists and left as friends.

This restaurant was a wonderful surprise. Mentioned over aperitivo in our hotel as an option within walking distance. Fantastic staff who were so welcoming and helpful even though no common language. The food was delicious, a huge Fiorentina steak with potatoes and salad. Also some delicious local street food treats. We tried fagotini, which was ham and cheese in breadcrumbs which was then fried. Also gnommareddi, offal wrapped in stomach lining, which sounds challenging but was delicious as long as you like liver and kidney. The wine was a perfect match, a negromara recommended which was only 15 euros. A completely delicious meal with wine for under 60 euros. As well as great value it was all which served by a warm and helpful waitress and a chef with clear pride in his food. They showed us the meat before cooking and helped to show how to finish the cooking on a hot plate at the table. A local restaurant which welcomed us as tourists and then topped off with a complimentary amaro. I would definite recommend a visit if you are staying in this area. A match for the many new basque style grill places in London but more relaxed and affordable.

il locale della trattoria e un antica Abbazia del 1700,con volte vista a stella, con un retro giardino esternoed una piazzetta affacciata sul bellissimo centro storico di Castiglione.D'estate si puo mangiare in giardino e sulla piazzetta.
After over a month cycling in Puglia, my husband and I have eaten in a lot of trattorias and restaurants in the region, most of them good. However the Trattoria Vardaceli really stood out for us. First of all, we arrived at lunch time, hot and exhausted on our bicycles. We clearly weren't going to be going for the full southern Italian five-course meal. Yet we were treated like royalty, just the same. The family who run restaurant are absolutely personable and clearly love what they do and care about what they are offering their customers. The food was delicious and well presented. The antipasto included the classic cheeses, meats, grilled vegetables and a great bruschetta. The pasta was hand made orecchiette (made by the mother of the family) with a simple but perfect tomato sauce. This was classic cucina povera fare, lovingly created and presented. Highly recommended.

The restuarant Manna dei Re (The Manna of the Kings) offers a mediterranean cuisine which includes meat and fish dishes. We pride ourselves on pampering our guests in a relaxing atmosphere with traditional fayre prepared in a creative manner by our Chef.
Went to this very excellent new restaurant in the small town of Minervino di Lecce. You canât go wrong ordering anything on the menu here. Worth the trip if you are staying in Otranto or anywhere near. All the fish we ordered was fresh and cooked just right: the tuna, the snapper, and salted cod. Everything was presented in a very picturesque way and tasted amazing all the way to the deconstructed tiramisu for dessert. Nice ambience and the a/c didnât hurt either. Lots of special touches, donât miss this restaurant. Bon Appetito!
