Devon Cottages - The Ultimate in Relaxing Breaks From the wilds of Dartmoor to the wooded hillsides of the Lyn Valley, Devon is undoubtedly one of England's most beautiful counties. Its overwhelmingly rural landscape means that catered accommodation is restricted to over-subscribed Bed and Breakfasts and hotels which are mostly concentrated in towns like Exeter and Barnstaple. Devon is a great location for a family holiday in the great outdoors, with everything from beach resorts at Ilfracombe to rambling in the hills of Exmoor and tors of Dartmoor. It is a large county, but whether you want to follow the Tarka Trail, or walk down the Doone Valley, you can be sure there will be cottages open for holiday rentals nearby. Devon's Cottages, All Mod Cons Most of Devon's holiday rental cottages started as farm buildings of some sort, and planning restrictions mean that many of them retain their rural charm on the outside. However, the cottages are generally renovated to 21st Century standards inside, with double glazing, TV, washing machines and fully-equipped kitchens. Families are well catered for in the higher end properties with games rooms, sometimes including full-size pool tables and large gardens for children to explore. Despite the unpredictability of Devon's weather even during the summer months, the comfort of these properties gives great peace of mind. Moreover, a week's holiday rental of a cottage in Devon can cost as little as £300 - £400. During the peak season you can spend as much as £900 a month for one of the larger or more luxurious cottages, which still works out to be cheaper than a lot of hotels, especially if you have to book several rooms to accommodate a family of four or five. Town Mouse or Country Mouse To get the best of Devon's startling countryside and its friendly communities, renting a holiday cottage near Lynton and Lynmouth can be a good start. It is a useful base from which to explore North Devon, and is within walking distance of several beauty spots, such as Watersmeet (complete with a small but impressive waterfall) and the Valley of the Rocks. Separated by a steep cliff, you can travel up a funicular railway from coastal Lynmouth to clifftop Lynton, with plenty of stunning walks, shopping opportunities and several beaches and boat trips to nearby coastal attractions. The twin villages also boast a concentration of well-equipped holiday cottages, from modest fisherman's cottages on the path to Watersmeet to grander hillside houses on the way to the Valley of the Rocks. Whatever your budget, Lynton and Lynmouth can provide some tempting accommodation options for your first Devon holiday.

So Disappointed not what I paid for £250, for one night ,to be put in basement with limited sea view. Had to go down 2 flights of stairs didn’t expect that. Breakfast was good, hotel was grand Bedroom was very small, not like pictures, I wanted a lovely luxury relaxing break this was not it. I had requested high floor sea view. I was told by reception that is was very busy weekend and in future to get a good deal book direct not with booking .com I had looked at the price and it was £40 more for the same room (hence booking .com) Would I go again yes to Torquay not to this hotel. We have stayed at The Ilsington Country House Hotel at least once a year since it first opened which is a testimony to how much we enjoy its beautiful surroundings, relaxed atmosphere, comfortable surroundings and excellent cuisine. It thoroughly deserves the AA Four Star Country House Hotel and the AA Two Rosettes for Culinary Excellence it has received in 2022. As a hotel it has all the qualities one would expect from a well run family hotel, not least a warm and friendly welcome. The awards it has received are a fitting tribute to the dedication of Richard Hassell and his team

Situated on the level seafront of this hugely popular Victorian seaside resort stands the welcoming Dilkhusa Grand Hotel. The hotel was originally a private house, bought by a Raj at the turn of the last century as a gift to his wife - Dilkhusa translates from Hindustani roughly as ‘House of the Happy Heart!’ The hotel overlooks the picturesque Runnymede gardens and is close to the Landmark theatre which attracts many national acts. It is also just a short walk from the bustling 10th-century harbour where Britain’s most famous living artist, Damien Hirst, owns a restaurant. The Dilkhusa has a well-appointed restaurant combining excellent hospitality and service. A spacious and comfortable entertainments suite provides the ideal setting in which to sit back and enjoy the acts at this friendly and sociable hotel...
My party of 4 recently stayed at the hotel on a self drive basis. Yes, the Hotel is tired and parts need updating but we considered it value for money. The food was as expected - value for money BUT the Hotel exceeded all our expectations in terms of staff. All hospitality sectors currently seem short staffed nowadays but every member of staff we encountered was helpful, friendly, professional and complied with our requests. All seemed extremely busy but found time to talk and sometimes laugh with us. They deserve a special mention and our thanks.

Situated in a quiet residential area of Torquay half a mile from the seafront, the Tor Park hotel is also within easy reach of the marina and the town centre’s shops, boutiques and restaurants. The hotel offers great facilities for you to enjoy and all the public areas are conveniently located on the ground floor. There are comfortable lounge areas in which to sit and relax in and the ever-popular sun terrace, which is a perfect place to unwind with a drink on a balmy summer’s eve! Inside, the entertainment suite has a dance floor and bar. The hotel is very popular for short breaks and prides itself on having many repeat customers year after year.
We had a 4 night break at the Tor Park Hotel which is situated approximately a mile from the town centre down a hill. The hotel is in a nice location, in Torre, a quiet area of Torquay and there is a train station a 5 minute walk away and a bus just across the road. The hotel is very nice, a bit dated but some rooms been refurbished. Everything is very clean and the rooms have tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer and a few products such as shampoo, shower gel etc. The rooms also have colour tv although the signal was a bid dodgy at times. The staff without exception, are very welcoming, helpful and pleasant and nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast and evening meals are very good. There was entertainment for 3 of the 4 nights we were there and it was all very good. There is a decking area with tables and chairs. The train service from the nearby station is excellent and you can go as far as Exmouth one way and Paignton the other. Very reasonable prices. The bus runs every 12 minutes to Torquay, Brixham or to Newton Abbot the other way. We would recommend the hotel to anyone.

Located in its own grounds in a quiet residential area, the Trecarn hotel is just a short stroll from the Babbacombe Downs and the delightful village of St Marychurch. The ground floor public areas of the hotel were the subject of an extensive refurbishment which has been very well received by our guests. The hotel now benefits from well-appointed lounge areas, large entertainment suite and bar. The restaurant has been completely re-styled and now offers a spacious and contemporary dining experience. After enjoying the renowned entertainments the hotel has to offer, you should also sleep better than ever as we have also refurbished 62 of the hotel's bedrooms! The Trecarn Hotel is ideally placed for exploring the surrounding area of Torbay and the delightful South Devon Coast. There is an excellent bus service taking you to town centre and beyond.
When booking the hotel I had read some awful reviews so I was expecting the worst. On arrival I was greeted by a very friendly member of staff who made me feel welcome, there was some entertainment on afterall it was friday night. On entering the room I was pleasantly surprised, the room was clean I even did the fingertip test, room, plenty of storage space, all the facilities ie: fan, iron and hairdryer. Bathroom was clean and looked like it may have been refitted recently. Really pleased with the stay I paid 65.00 for 2 nights on a Friday and Saturday night and the hotel had everything I needed. Would recommend

When I initially telephoned to make the booking for the Ashbury Hotel everything went well and I even managed to book the rounds of golf I wanted as well as a buggy for transport. I was told by the lady in the golf shop that, as I was the only one playing , I would get the buggy for half price. My wife and I arrived - after a struggle to find the correct road to reach the Ashbury hotel, in time for my "pre checkin round" to find that the buggy would NOT be half price as I had been informed when booking, It was no longer part of the deal and the buggy would be £22 per round. We checked in after golf to find the Hotel staff were very pleasant very helpful and informative answering all queries fully, nothing was too much trouble. The room was a nice twin room with all the bits and pieces needed for a comfortable stay. The staff in the dining areas again were very pleasant and went out of their way to do everything possible they could to make sure we had all we required. The next day we went for my second round of golf on the Kigbeare , again having to pay the full £22 for a single player. The Golf shop staff I found were very off hand and not very communicative as if was just a "job". We were part way round the Kigbeare course with all its ups and downs with a buggy that was very slow up the hills just managing to get up to the top of the longest hills. As we got to the 17th tee the buggy just died so I phoned the hotel for assistance - which was quite quick in coming. When I returned to the shop I was told there was a notice on the buggy saying that if a fault occurred to phone the number. I tried to explain that my wife is not British and does not read English I suffer from Dyslexia & Dyscalculia (trouble reading words and discerning numbers) which is made more severe when under stress - which I certainly was after the buggy incident. My wife has health problems starting to feel unwell and distressed after the poor buggy trip - she even had to get out at times to rest. I thought that I might be offered some sort of apology or a refund for the trouble by the shop people but they were very offhand and totally unsympathetic insisting it WAS ABSOLUTELY MY FAULT for not phoning about the buggy before it broke down. After having had our meal my wife was feeling unwell and said she wanted go home as soon as possible so I cancelled the rest of my golf rounds, went to see reception to tell them we were leaving early to which they showed great sympathy and disappointment at our departure but, obviously, understood our reasons for cutting our visit short. This was our 5th or 6th visit to Ashbury & Manor Hotels which, in the past, have been excellent but, this visit was wholly spoilt by the offhand treatment (almost a "WE DON'T CARE SO LONG AS WE GET YOUR MONEY" attitude) from the golf shop staff. I don't know if we will ever visit the complex again, in the past we have introduced family from the far east to the area, who thoroughly enjoyed their stays with you but, this time the treatment I received from the Golf Shop Staff has left a nasty taste in my mouth and, if we do visit again I will bring my own buggy and not play any of the hilly courses again. The only thing that stood out as excellent was the treatment we received from all the other staff which were exemplary. For them a 5 * rating for the Golf Shop a 1* minus rating.
