Wiener Neustadt (German pronunciation: [ˈviːnɐ ˈnɔʏʃtat]) is a city located south of Vienna, in the state of Lower Austria, in north-east Austria. It is a self-governed city and the seat of the district administration of Wiener Neustadt-Land District. The city is the site of one of the world's oldest military academies, the Theresian Military Academy, which was established by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1752 to train officers for the Austrian army.

I've hiked there a few times, with family and friends, and always enjoyed it. You can spend an afternoon or just an hour or two hiking up or down the ladders and path, feeling the soft spray of the falls descending from a clean and cool mountain spring. Nature is still intact in that part of the world.

A rare and beautiful Romanesque church in Wiener-Neustadt’s old town. Well worth the visit inside if you are interested in very old church architecture and art. They include old wooden choirs with a medieval favorite of mine: little cherub angels made of a head and wings and nothing else. Also the “All-seeing Eye,” or “the eye of Providence.” Excellent painted wooden statues of the apostles and saints decorate the cornices along the nave.

We had a couple of hours to spend in Wiener Neustadt before taking the train to Vienna, so we decided to do some sightseeing around the old town.
One of our stops was this tiny weapon museum. It isn't that interesting, but it's located inside the imposing north-west corner tower of the city's fortifications. Built almost 800 years ago, it was used for the storage of torture instruments. Worth a visit!

An interesting collection, with occasional temporary Exhibitions. It adds stories to the history of a city that's virtually unknown outside Austria.

a military stronghold against the east, buildt with the ransom for King Richard the Lionheart collected by Robin Hood. Grave of Emperor Maximilian (grandfather of Charles V.). Not to be missed!
