We spent an illuminating afternoon learning about the critical Women’s Airforce Service Corps (WASP) with so many stories of valor and sacrifice.

In 1967 the Nolan County Historical Society was collecting artifacts in the old Johnson Funeral Home and was open two afternoons a week to the public. In 1970 the Old Safeway building was purchased for the purpose of the museum and was housed here for about 5 years. In 1975 Robert A. Ragland, grandson of Judge R.A. and Mrs. Ragland donated the Ragland House to Nolan County and the City of Sweetwater. The house was restored and opened to the public as the Pioneer Museum in a dedication ceremony that also celebrated our nation's Bi-Centennial on July 4, 1976. The house was awarded the Official Historical Medallion, Texas Historical Commission in 1979. Our Mission: To preserve Nolan County and the City of Sweetwater's History, to educate the local and national public about our History, to nurture and broaden children's natural inquisitive nature and answer their age old question "Where did I come from?".
First, ignore the poor reviews from those that have never even been to Sweetwater or the museum but solely have a political grudge!! The museum and its curator are both excellent and well worth the visit if you are actually in Sweetwater. Melonnie is a delight and the historical artifacts ( toys, clothes, cars, tools) paint a clear picture of the life and times of Sweetwater, Texas.
