Stein is located about 10 kilometers southwest of downtown Nuremberg. The company Faber (now Faber-Castell) was established here in 1761 and is a well known brand in writing and drawing products. The Stein city coat of arms includes two pairs of pencils, showing the importance of the company to the city. Today, it is the 9th generation of the family that runs the business in Stein. The company offers a number of tours at reasonable prices and as the number of visitors to each tour is limited, it is possible to make an advance reservation. As we were not sure when we would arrive at the Visitor Centre we had not made any reservations. However, we were lucky and thanks to the helpful staff at the Visitor Centre, we were able to attend both the tour “Alte Mine” (the historic factory facilities) and the tour of the castle. Both tours were very interesting and the guides and the rest of the Faber-Castell team very friendly and helpful. After having attended the tour it is possible to buy Faber-Castell products at a discount, and we would definitely recommend visiting this great company.
