We took two of our grandchildren to the South Hill Model Train Museum. There are wonderful minuture panoramas of various activites that took place along the rail lines throughout the area. The individuals that are at the museum are very knowledgable about the history of the area.
There is also a caboose, that the kids are allowed to climb on. What fun!
The doll museum which is one room in the same building is also a lot of fun. What a fantastic collection of dolls from the late 1800's through the 1990's. Some of them brought back a lot of wonderful memories, both of my childhood, and my children's.
This museum is free, but a donation is suggested.

This is really a nice attraction to visit if you are into dolls and/or trains. My wife truly enjoyed the doll collection as I enjoyed the huge model train layout in an adjacent room. This is in the middle of town at the Chamber building, easy to find, and with friendly folks. No charge, but donations are accepted. They close at 4pm, so don't go later.

The Colonial Theatre has a very special place in the history of our community and in the lives of many of our residents. It has weathered many storms and economic crises, as well as years of neglect at various times throughout its history. The Colonial is one of the few remaining vaudeville theatres of its era in Virginia and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
This fully restored gem of a theatre in downtown South Hill is the perfect place to enjoy either type of live entertainment. There's plenty of free parking nearby, the theatre seats nearly 400 in a main floor and the balcony. The acoustics are outstanding, so where you sit really doesn't matter to be able to hear perfectly what's taking place onstage. The local Community theater group(CATS) produces 5 shows a year--both music revues and plays, and the professional groups provide a wide variety of music Irish to country to Bluegrass to Beach--you get the idea. If you're travelling through this area,or staying in the vicinity be sure to check out what their calendar has to offer at Colonialcenterva.org,

The Tobacco Farm Life Museum focuses on the life-style and activities of the farm family during the early 1900's and offers displays on the production of tobacco from seed to market through exhibits and film. Open Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free but donations are accepted.
This is a small but rather unique museum in a very small southern town where tobacco used to be king. Kids might be a little bored today because this museum shows how things were really grown and harvested -- nothing technological about it. When tobacco was king and a big cash crop, all of these things in here were relevant. Although no longer relevant, the history of farming tobacco is a great place to visit if you have any curiosity or imagination at all.

If you have anything else on your calendar, do yourself a favor and do those things and forget about visiting this place. It was very disappointing. There is really nothing much to see here.
