The modern visitors center introduces the early rivalry between the English and French in Newfoundland as well as the early cod trade accross the Atlantic in vivid & pedagogical ways: displays of humans, toys as tools, easily read posters, a short video, dressing up in original army uniforms and lots of original artifacts. An audio guide helps you make the most of the visit to the Fortress itself. Staff is exceptionally knowledgable and helpful, gift shop inviting and well-assorted and entry fee most reasonable.

We are amazed that TripAdvisor has so few reviews of this truly interesting and well-done museum about key themes of Newfoundland history. We stopped here while driving from Cape St. Mary's to Trinity on a rainy day and, quite frankly we thought we might just stop in for a quick visit before going to a restaurant in Placentia for lunch. We ended up staying in the museum for 3 hours!!! We were given an interesting tour (about 45 minutes) of the historic house, its history, and that of its owners through the years. But in many of the rooms were displays on topics much broader than just the history of the house. There were lots of displays and signboards about the codfish moratorium and its devastating impact on Newfoundland fishing communities, about how the US established a WW2 military base in nearby Argentia and the effects on the local economy when it opened and later closed, about how the outport resettlement programs severely impacted the people of the region, and many other interesting topics. The tourguide (who is also the manager of the museum) encouraged us to go back to look at those displays after the tour and, as we did so she also answered questions and gave us her family's personal involvements in many of those topics. She was so knowledgeable and interesting, and we had a wonderful time talking to her as well as ingesting the fascinating information in the exhibits. We really enjoyed this place and know that others who visit will do likewise!

We stumbled onto this beautiful beach when we were visiting Placentia last weekend. I would argue that this is one of the most tranquil beaches I have visited in the province. It is truly untouched beauty with a freshwater river and swimming hole on one side, and charcoal-like sand on the other with the Atlantic Ocean and waves splashing. Gorgeous to sit, read a book, enjoy a picnic from the Three Sisters in Placentia. The only downside was the slightly rough road to get there, as well as the off-road parking. You would benefit from 4-wheel drive to get down.
