Top 6 Things to do in Nosy Boraha, Madagascar

November 25, 2017 Lean Nau

Idyllic scenery, majestic sea life, a…pirate cemetery? Surreal, serene Nosy Boraha was a once a retreat for some of history’s most notorious pirates, many of whom are buried here. The skull and crossbones-marked tombstones are among the Madagascar island’s most popular attractions. Equally attractive are the opportunities to sight amorous humpback whales, who migrate to the surrounding waters during their July to September mating season. Hiking, cycling, and reef-snorkeling round out the charming island’s appeal.

The whales were magnificent. Unfortunately the boat was so overcrowded that some couples were forced to stand - and moved around the boat like ballast - to balance the boat, which must have been extremely disappointing for them, and caused quite a bit of tension on the boat as the guide told them it was ok to sit down but then the boat lost balance. One particularly rude middle aged man in red glasses decided to play teachers pet and created an aggressive atmosphere, yelling at the couples to 'stop smiling' instead of moving to the back himself! All in all I hope that everyone on this 'adventure' receive a full refund. We had seats and made the best of it, but it was extremely overcrowded and the boat did not feel safe. Very disappointing as we booked it from this hotel in particular due to the good reviews and did not expect them to treat their patrons like cattle.

a beautiful location and steeped in history - the stories shared by the guides really bring the island to life. The fee at the 'gate' covers the guide as well.

a beautiful island and all the hotels have rooms on the beach. The whale watching is spectacular, we were fortunate to see about 8 whales the boat kept a respectful distance and we rode alongside them for quite a distance. Amazing experience!

we walked here from the northern part of the island where the boat dropped us off (in front of the South African place). it was a long walk but absolutely gorgeous! Unbelievably so! We were pinching ourselves! The food was really good. the walk back through the villages was lovely. A must! Great excursion from St.Marie island.

We rented a scooter and drove all the way up to the north of the island to explore the north part of Sainte Marie. The Piscine naturelle are a group of 3 pools with pristine water standing in a very nice and natural environment where you can take stuff and enjoy a nice picnic or use the bar that has been built around the pool number 3.
