Mount Katahdin

Located at the northern end of the Appalachian Trail, the tallest peak in Maine stands at 5,267 feet.

Reviewed By JNFII - Stamford, Connecticut

The Hunt trail is the last 5.2 mile of the Appalachian trail from Georgia. It’s a good, steep trail going up that I would not recommend going back down. The first mile is actually pretty flat for the first mile, then the steep climb begins for approximately 3.5 miles, getting you above treeline. The last mile is relatively flat as you walk across “the table” where you will see the Abol trail junction. The summit is just ahead with 300ft elevation gain. Views from the top are spectacular. If you choose to go down Abol, it’s not as steep and brings you down to Abol Campground about 3 miles from the start of the Hunt trail at Katahdin stream campground. You can walk along the dirt road. Stick your thumb out and hopefully someone will be nice enough to offer you a ride. Enjoy!

Baxter State Park

This park features Mount Katahdin, the largest mountain in Maine, and where you might also catch sight of a moose.

We went to Baxter to walk the Appalachian Trail and climb Mt. Katahdin. It is an absolutely stunning park! I can't say enough about the vistas of the mountains, forest, falls and ponds. It was fun seeing and talking to some of the through hikers who were on the verge of finishing their long trek on the Appalachian Trail! We walked part of the AT but didn't use it (Hunt Trail) to summit Katahdin. We stopped at the Ranger Station and the Ranger advised us to take an longer but "Moderately Difficult" trail up Katahdin instead. Great advice indeed (see my review under Mt. Katahdin). Other staff we encountered were equally knowledgeable and helpful. The facilities I used were very well maintained. I used a pit toilet at the Roaring Brook parking lot when we got off the trail (early evening) and it was spotless and no smell. The park has so much more to offer! They don't allow RV parking (there are private campgrounds nearby) but they do offer cabins and tent camping. It wasn't super busy when we went but we were told it is much busier in the summer months. Read up on what to do before you go. They have an excellent website! If you love the outdoors, this park is definitely for you.

Nice gallery with numerous pieces for sale. Friendly owner/staff free with local information. Millinocket is small, so you can easily stop and chat at all the local businesses while walking downtown.

Come enjoy Baxter State Park and the hundred-mile wilderness in their most scenic and tranquil season. Katahdin Nordic offers snowshoes and cross-country skis for all sizes and ages. Enjoy our extended winter fun season - November thru April! Snow shoeing and groomed backcountry skiing available on-site. Just 5 miles from the Bait Hole ski trails. Katahdin Nordic is located at the Katahdin Cabins, just 1/2 mile from downtown Millinocket and 15 miles from the south entrance of Baxter State Park.

My children and I were quite impressed with the variety of cross country ski and snowshoe equipment available at Katahdin Nordic Center. The equipment is available at very affordable daily or weekly rates. The equipment was in very good condition and it was not too hard to find the correct sizes. The owners of Katahdin Cabins run the Nordic Center from a building located on their property. So, when staying at Katahdin Cabins (which I highly recommend), you can easily try out some x-country and snow shoe equipment that is sure to satisfy. In addition, there are some trails on the property to "warm up" on. Down the road, the Bait Hole Trails provides some real nice trails for skiing and show shoeing. And, for the best views around, head down the road to Abol Bridge and ski into Baxter State Park .

New England Outdoor Center Cross Country Skiing

The New England Outdoor Center is consistently expanding and building on-site, world class Nordic ski trails. The original 10 kilometer trail system was designed by preeminent designer and Olympian John Morton. The terrain, featuring views of Black Cat Mountain is a mix of exhilarating down-hills, invigorating up-hills and everything in between. Be sure to pick up a trail map and check-in with the front desk before heading out on the trails.

Track is NOT rolled or set wide enough for skate skiing. The last time we were there, there were two tracks set IN THE CENTER OF THE TRAIL! What a joke. Obviously the person grooming the trails is not a skier themselves, as they would know better. We have visited Millinocket many times just to eat at the River Driver's and to go skiing, but no more. We are done wasting gas money in hopes of a great day of skiing, just to be disappointed. The only upside to these trails is that you don't have to pay to use them. And now we have learned why, because NO REAL skier would pay to ski here. These trails have SO much potential, it's too bad they can't get their act together.
