Formerly known as the Castle of Glooms, this castle is beautifully sited upon a narrow bridge overlooked by the Ochil Hills. The 15th century fortress of Castle Campbell is dramatically situated above Dollar Glen. The oldest part is a well-preserved 15th century tower around which other buildings were constructed, including an unusual loggia. Castle Campbell was once the home of the powerful Campbell earls of Argyll, and has connections with historical figures such as John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots. Open all year. Winter closed Thurs and Fri
We parked our car in the marked carpark and picnic area, then we had a 1500metre walk, mainly uphill, when we got almost there we found another carpark! However, if it is busy, then the road is only wide enough for one vehicle.
The castle is worthwhile visiting if only for the incredible views, but there are lots of rooms to see, a small cafe in peak times and a small shop.

This free attraction offers the 2 beautiful streams called "Burn of Care" and "Burn of Sorrow" flowing through the Dollar Glen. There is good track leading around the area and it is advised to take good grip water resistant footwear. The paths can get steep in places, but there is a couple of viewing points that have been constructed to offer good safe views. This is a nice place to take the dog for a walk around as well. Free parking can be found on Castle Road at the Quarry car park, but do not drive beyond this car park due to the condition of the access road. Disabled parking is available close to Castle Campbell but the area is not suitable for wheelchairs. The area is cared for by The National Trust of Scotland, but note that Castle Campbell is actually organized by Historic Scotland. Please take plastic bags for litter and Doggy poo to dispose later on. Group visits of Dollar Glen and Castle Cambpell can be organized in advance.

No entry fee, but visitors may make a donation. This is quite a small village/rural life museum with an emphasis on the (now closed) local Devon Valley railway and local houses - including Dollar Academy. Main display on the ground floor (with a re-constructed "Granny's Kitchen") and a research room/archive on the first floor. No lift, but a disabled toilet on the ground floor.
Well maintained with helpful volunteers.
