Local museums in small towns often give a fascinating look at local history in great detail. The Harvey House Museum is no exception. The volunteer docents are both knowledgeable and friendly. The guided tour is much more informative that browsing on one's own. Be sure to watch the video presentation offered. And the railroad theme is well supported by the constant parade of trains right outside the front entrance. The gift shop is an excellent book store featuring volumes on railroads, especially Fred Harvey, the Harvey Houses, Harvey's dining car operations, the Santa Fe Railroad, New Mexico and local history. The gift shop also features railroad theme items ranging from good gifts to mere trinkets. The museum goes overboard for Christmas. In December 2019 there are 119 Christmas trees on display, each with a different theme ranging from power tools (yes, really) to the Grinch with birds, Ireland, Scotland and garden club in between. The Belen terminal of the Rail Runner is within easy walking distance of the museum.
