The holidays were a wonderful time to visit this museum although it stays closed now till the spring but what an educational return to yesteryear to see how people lived in the past. Interestingly enough, this area was not devastated that much during the Depression because the farms were self-sufficient. The museum houses a full-scale farm house which contains artifacts from everyday life in each room, a tin shop, a blacksmith’s shop, a general store, a barn, farm implements, gardens, and historical archives. What is amazing is the amount of donations that have been made to showcase an authentic lifestyle for these rural residents of Carroll County. Families were touring during our visit, but the museum can accommodate school groups, weddings and women’s teas. Another place to stop is the arts council downtown located in a restored theatre on Main Street. Their Xmas offerings of local crafts runs from Thanksgiving until the holidays and is a perfect place to shop for local well-made items.

My husband and I took advantage of the first low-humidity-sunny-day-in-the-time-of-covid and left the Annapolis area for a Sunday drive and walk. We wound up at Union Mills and it was a wonderful visit. We've visited lots - and I do mean lots-of historic landmarks in our time, and were enchanted by this place. The house is closed because of covid but the mill tour was open - and it was the first commercial mill we've been to in Maryland - except for Wye Mills on the eastern shore. The docent was fabulous - he was involved in the Mill's restoration in the 1980's, became a Williamsburg interpreter, and has now moved back in his retirement to run the mill. We assumed that a mill dating to the 18th century was not operational - what a nice surprise to find that they still grind wheat and corn and to see those wheels turn. They are covid prepared, hand sanitizer everywhere and masks required. And lovely respite.

The Carroll Arts Center is a gem of a theater/art museum in Westminster, Md. They offer a wide variety of movies and live theater as well as wonderful art exhibits. We love the free family summer movies. The spring Peep Show is a must see, and I love to support local artists by purchasing their items on display around Christmastime. Show prices are affordable for someone on a budget. I’m grateful for this sweet haven of culture and creativity!

We started early on a hot day and did a nice loop which eventually crossed a creek. You have to either take your shoes off or walk/slither across a falls tree. Great shade all the way through and varied terrain, even some hills.
