Visited here during a tour from the Messina cruise port with Discover Messina Siciliy. The drive was over an hour long but it was worth it to see this unique and scenic landscape! Driving up the volcano was interesting; we even saw smoke coming from the volcano! The craters of Silvestri are two inactive craters formed as a result of the Mount Etna eruption of 1892. They are about 1900 meters above sea level, but you could reach a higher elevation if you want. We were satisfied to spend an hour or so here walking around the craters. The climb was not difficult and this site is suitable for all ages. There is also a restaurant and store that sells souvenirs near by. We were told it would be very cold on the volcano but I was comfortable in my Capri pants and t-shirt in October month.

La Funivia dell'Etna è l'unica società sul versante Etna Sud ad effettuare escursioni fino alle zone crateriche autorizzate.
We (myself and 4 colleagues) just visited Mount Etna and even tho we were not prepared at all and the last ones arrived with cable car and 4x4 the experience was amazing. 1. We drove to Refugio Sapienza and park there (we gave 1 euro as donation for the parking). We arrived around 2pm - relatively late 2. At the Refugio, we purchased tickets for the cable car and the (4X4) bus directly at the cable car station. The cable car was €30 each (return journey); The cable car leaves you at 2,500m and then you can either walk or take this bus to the top (amazing view on both ways). The last cable car down is at 16:00 3. The 4x4 buses (something between bulldozer and snowplow) run continuously up/down from the upper cable station to the summit 2,920m (you are not allowed to go closer) with an Alpinist / guide. The 4x4 costs €40 (return journey) and, €9 for the guide (obligatory). on top you walk approximately 300-500m to a crater for amazing view. 4. At the upper cable car station it's possible to rent a warm jacket and hiking shoes. We didn't have time to rent as we were the last who reached and were running but i would recommend to be prepared for low temperatures. 5. The cost is quite high however i think it's worth the experience; you can also try to hike this so you will not need to pay anything; we payed the full amount (79 Euro) at the bottom Cable Car station by credit card.
