The Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon is a very special place - it is where the mighty Vatnajökull glacier dips into the Atlantic. The landscape of smaller or bigger icebergs that broke into the water from the glacier and slowly drift towards the ocean is amazing. You can actually pick up. little boulders of ice that have been washed onto the shore. This must rank with the ten or twelve most awesome natural sites that I have seen..... and it's worth the long drive from Reykjavik to see.

I was so looking forward to this, and it certainly did not disappoint. Beautiful beach with gorgeous icebergs and black sand. Quite busy at the main part, but as soon as you start walking down the beach you're alone.

We visited Fjallsarlon on a dull day in May. Very few tourists and the silence of the place was eerie. The only sound was the occasional rumble as chunks of ice broke off the glaciers on the distant far shore of the lagoon. It is a short walk over a hill from the carpark to the lagoon and from the first sight it is absolutely amazing, like walking into a grey toned photograph, the only colour being the occasional blue tinted iceberg.. We were driving anticlockwise around the ring road so arrived her before we saw Jokulsarlon, and I have to admit we drove in and out of the carpark there without stopping as the atmosphere was so different - more tourists, cars parked right beside the lagoon, and none of the eerie beauty of Fjallsarlon. This place is not to be missed.
