Royston Picture Palace

I confess I have only sat in the upstairs section- I think downstairs might be a tad too close for comfort for spectacle wearers but is tiered. Staff are all volunteers, cheerful, and friendly. Recently a good choice of films: Jojo rabbit; 1917; Le Mans 66; Cats. A selection of snacks and ice cream is available. Certainly good value for money. Book in advance online. Nice to have a small local facility after the demise of the previous venue.

The Red Cow, Chrishall

Far from the hubbub of the main roads, nestled amidst thatched cottages in the pretty village of Chrishall, just South of Cambridge between Saffron Walden and Royston, sits The Red Cow - a picture-perfect thatched pub, ideal for your escape to the country. The Red Cow is owned & managed by Toby Didier'Serre & his partner Alexis Beeching. As a lover of fresh produce and rural sporting activities, Toby relishes his role as The Red Cow’s convivial host and ensures our guests are made to feel as welcome as possible. The recent addition of five beautifully appointed and luxurious guest rooms in the old thatched barn and post office adjacent to the pub complete the offering of great food, wine, atmosphere and rooms. But don't take our word for it. Take a look at the pictures and book a table or a room.

We stayed at the Red Cow for 4 nights while cycling and walking in Cambridgeshire. The pub was set up very well for Social distancing and the food and drinks were great. Breakfast was outstanding with the local sausages and the Ducks eggs particularly notable. The accommodation is outstanding, of a really high standard and the room staff were very helpful

Royston Cave

Royston Cave is an enigma. No records of its age or purpose exist. Some theories suggest it was used by the Knights Templar, others by King James I and the Freemasons. Discovered by accident in 1742, Royston Cave has continued to baffle visitors for centuries. Man-made and beehive shaped; the cave is cut 25ft into the chalk that underlies Royston’s ancient crossroad, Ermine Street and Icknield Way. The cave contains an extensive range of wall carvings representing the Crucifixion, the Holy Family and several saints including St Katherine and St Christopher. Elsewhere are figures of a horse and an Earth Goddess, believed to be Pagan symbols for fertility.

I have been here twice and most people I know say they always mean to go but never get around to it. It is fascinating inside. Though not big ( high, not wide), it has a informative 'guide' to explain what all the markings are as far as is known and it is just something that I feel everyone should go to at least once as it is so historic....and right under your feet when walking on the opposite side of the road to Lloyds bank ! You would never imagine what was down there !
