Top 6 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia

November 10, 2021 Layne Dawes

Just across the Rhine River from Dusseldorf, Neuss was founded by the Romans in 16 B.C., as the military colony of Novaesium, making it one of Germany's oldest Roman settlements. The town thrived in the Middle Ages, and in the late 15th century staved off the Siege of Neuss by Burgundian leader Charles the Bold. Museum Insel Hombroich is one of the city's main attractions, a unique venue fusing nature, art and architecture amid the heavy industrialization of the Rhine-Ruhr area.

Clemens-Sels-Museum

The Clemens Sels Museum Neuss is notable for the diversity of its collection, which encompasses a broad spectrum of the history of art and culture. A prominent position is occupied by the art collection. Alongside major paintings from the Middle Ages and by 17th century Dutch painters, the works by the Nazarenes, Pre-Raphaelites and Symbolists make it a collection unique in Germany. Also represented are the Rhineland Expressionists with a superb selection of paintings, prints and stained glass. Additionally the Museum has comprehensive holdings of paintings and sculptures by Naïve artists who occupy an entirely distinct position within the art of the 20th century. In the area of contemporary art color painting is another focus of the Museum’s collection. Other sections give insight into pre- and early modern history, the historical and economic development of the city of Neuss and the rise of regional bourgeois culture.

Alpenpark Neuss

Germany's first indoor ski slope, the Skihalle Neuss was opened in the town of Neuss by the allrounder group of companies. Since 4 January 2001 the order of the day has been "Ski and sledge well". Skiing, apres-ski, high class Alpine cuisine and the Hotel Fire & Ice Dusseldorf Neuss - the concept of the all-year-round ski resort in Lower Rhine has been a resounding successright from the start. In the summer months, outdoor climbing, adventure golf, the SalzburgerAlm beer garden and the Baumchalet tree houses complete the mountain range of offers.

The Skihalle can easily be reached by public bus. Make your way to Neuss HBF and take bus 843 to the Skihalle exit. The bus runs twice an hour and it takes about 25 minutes. Leaving the Skihalle, the bus stop is right across from where you exited the other bus. Pick up times here are on the hour and half hour. I went early, 9.30 am, on a Wednesday morning and it was not crowded. By noon it started filling up. You can rent skis/snowboard, shoes, jackets, ski pants and helmets. I am not sure about socks, however no gloves or hats. There is a ski shop next to the pay desk where you can buy stuff at reasonable prices. You can buy a 2-hour, 3 hours, all day ticket, Wednesday afternoon ticket etc. Online, you can reserve/buy it all as well and it may be a few euro’s cheaper. Where you get your skis there are lockers for your stuff and you will need a 1-euro coin in order to use the locker. (yes, you will get it back) There are 2 ski areas, 1 sledding area. The signs are in German and English. Poles are available, sorted by length in the main ski area. In regard to the main ski area, I was told the slope is about 300 meters long, there is 1 main ski lift and each seat seats 4. It is all well laid out and functional. Since I hadn’t skied in many years, this was very nice as it was not busy, and the difficulty level is about medium. So, going about it for 2 hours was great. If you are an expert skier who seeks a long thrill rides, or if you do not like crowds, this may not be for you. For me it was perfect, and it was enjoyable. This is a great attraction/thing to do when you are in the area, and it maybe the coolest thing to do in the summer. Just remember that when you are done to turn in your ski card, and you will get 2 euros back (deposit) That was not mentioned anywhere or to me. There is also a self-serve restaurant on-site, bathrooms are free, and Wi-Fi is available. Enjoy
