The charming island of Tahaa is scattered with small villages nestled along hillside bays. Known as the "vanilla island" because of its large-scale production of the fragrant bean, Tahaa is the ultimate in romantic escapism, tickling your nose as it tickles your fancy with gorgeous views, beautiful beaches and serendipitous lagoons.

The coral gardens are incredible. If staying at Le Taha'a you should cross over to the motu across the channel, walk towards the open sea area at the end and then get in. When you do be careful because that's where the current is strongest. To avoid the coral you can stay on the outside closest to the shoreline that you enter. For better scenery try to get into the middle of the channel asap. There are a ton of fish. Most are small. The exception was a giant trigger fish that was a little aggressive. He was about 1 foot tall and 1.5-2 feet long. They have nasty looking teeth too. He was right in the middle close to where the gardens start. You definitely need water shoes and if you have gloves, a rash guard/swim shirt, and board shorts even better. I went through 6-8 times over a few days and while sometimes I escaped unscathed, on 2 occasions I ended up with scrapes. I was being aggressive though and swimming in some tight areas and where the coral comes very close to the surface. On one occasion I swung my arm to paddle and my palm scraped the coral cutting me in a few places. On another occasions I scraped my knees and the side of my calf on coral. A week later it's still healing. Definitely worth the experience though. I recommend water shoes over flippers because when the water gets really shallow you may want to stand and walk out but you need to step around the coral. Some area are tight and flippers wouldn't fit where you're trying to step plus it's hard to walk in them anyways.

We learned a lot about how vanilla is grown in Tahaa. The gal who showed us around and explained to us how vanilla is grown, harvested and made into extract spoke good English and was very friendly and helpful. We were glad that we were able to purchase some vanilla to take home to make into extract. Our guide went out of her way to ensure this would happen. Make sure you bring cash or Visa, since they don't take American Express.

Selling the pearls we produce on our farm, providing one of the largest stock of pearls in various shapes, round, baroque, and sizes, from little ones to big pearls. Several big pearls, rare stock. Jewels mounted on the farm. The quality of our pearls is of highest importance to us, and much-sought. We offer our guests a free visit of the farm, to get the public into a deep knowledge of the pearl culture, of our work process, and of the quality criterion that apply to a pearl. Give us a phone call to plan your visit, in the morning or the day before, so we can give you our best.
