Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is on the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to the south of the Yorkshire Dales, 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Bradford and 38 miles (61 km) west of York. At the 2011 Census, the population was 14,623.

From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the staff and service here were fabulous. This was our second stay at The Coniston Hotel, our fist since Covid. The staff are doing everything possible to make clients stays as great can and we definitely felt they were doing that. When we arrived we checked into our Lake View room (highly recommend booking) and then took a stroll around the lake. We bumped into Mr Bannister on our stroll who took the time to speak with us. Such a lovely gentleman and his main concern was that we were being looked after well enough at the hotel. Which we assured him we absolutely were. We booked the 6-8pm Spa time slot, really nice and quiet, there were only 4 other guests in there at the same time. At one point we had the Spa to ourselves. Dinner in 'The View' was amazing, the food is outstanding. Again, the service from the staff, even with the new set up of service , due to Covid, was perfect. Excellent gym and swimming pool. Very helpful staff. Clean changing rooms. Friendly environment. Excellent parking facilities too and a very pleasant cafe experience.
