Rancho Palos Verdes (also known by the abbreviation RPV) is a city in Los Angeles County, California atop the Palos Verdes Hills and bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. An affluent suburb of Los Angeles, it is known for large tracts of open space and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Palos Verdes is translated as "Ranch of Green Sticks", probably referring to the willows in the northeastern part of Bixby Slough (now known as Machado Lake) shown on earlier maps.

Wayfarers Chapel is nestled in a grove of towering redwood trees. Lloyd Wright designed the Chapel out of glass, wood, and stone elements that come together at 30 and 60 degree angles. It opened in 1951 to serve as a place for all wayfarers on life's journey to stop and give glory to God and is famous for its organic architecture. With its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island, the 3.5 acres that the Chapel sits on feature beautifully landscaped gardens with trees forming arbored walkways leading to gardens replicating the forest floor, expansive lawns, an outdoor amphitheater, and a rose garden with a walk of honor featuring engraved pavers. Wayfarers Chapel is a Swedenborgian church that welcomes people of all faiths to their worship services and to celebrate other important passages of life, including memorial services, baptisms, and weddings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the National Memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg.

The Ocean Trails are truly a hidden gem. We hiked on a sunny winter day and it was still quite lovely, as there had been some recent rain. Certainly well worth the effort and time. It really is not that long a walk, compared to the other trails in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. You get some amazing views, and if you are a golfer, you can watch them hit. But also watch out for stray golf balls! The whole area is so peaceful and relaxing - you can hear the waves against the rocks - amazing... Very relaxing and peaceful hike to go with a date or the family. Listening to the ocean waves crashing onto the shore rocks is very tranquil. The scenic views are breathtaking as well.

We arrived at what we regarded as the perfect time to admire the fine construct and its gorgeous surrounding panoramic land and seascapes. Late afternoon as the evening light began fading. Walking from the Interpretive Centre towards the lighthouse was wonderful. Seeing the ever changing light on the rugged coastline creating varying patterns of hues was inspiring. It was fascinating to learn that its famous 5 foot Fresnel lens, which was hand ground in France, spent its first 40 years in an Alaskan lighthouse before ending up in Point Vincente in 1926.

Green Hills Memorial Park is in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles, California. Ambling down Western Avenue one early evening, we came upon these beautifully landscaped rolling greens. Not quite sure what this park was all about, we entered the gates and soon realized we were in an exceptionally beautiful cemetery. We were told this facility that dates back seventy years to 1948, spans all of 120 acres. It is a truly beautiful place - a small fountain right at the gates and a gently gurgling stream welcome visitors. Broad curving drives take one up gently rising greens. Almost at the crest is the mausoleum and the chapel. The park that is demarcated into various sections is exceptionally well maintained, with lush green lawns, well tended trees, spotlessly clean roads and flowers of the most brilliant hues. These breathtakingly beautiful landscaped grounds overlook the Pacific Ocean and Los Angeles Harbour. Park hours are 7am through 7pm. This memorial park certainly lives up to its promise of "Life Celebrated Perfectly"... and indeed for those interred here in such ethereal surroundings, they cannot but rest in peace!
