To truly get away from it all, there’s no place like Ilha de Tinhare. No cars are allowed on this Brazilian island, so you can enjoy the enchanting beaches in peace and quiet. (Unless it’s Carnival, of course.) Zipline from a lighthouse, snorkel amid a rainbow-assortment of sea life or explore one of Tinhare’s five quaint villages. When the sun goes down, the energy picks up. Grab a fresh and fruity cocktail in Morro de Sao Paulo to start your night off right.

This small village of less than 150 people at the junction of the Valeria River and the Amazon is quite a fascinating place to visit. The locals have certainly learned how to make money form the cruise ship tourists but it was certainly a good experience for us. They dress up for photos and bring their pets (sloths, monkeys, toucans, parrots, capybaras, etc.) for photos as well. The going rate is $1.00 (US) for a photo. The kids also loved the candy that we brought. For $5.00 one could take a small boat trip for a half hour or more to see the gigantic lily pads and the larger nearby village. Awesome.
