The taste is from top restaurants, very flavorful and subtle. The 2 dishes we had are fantastic - stew black pork and prawn scallopIt comes with a higher price tag, about 10k yen for 2 of us with one shochu. Worth a try if you have the budget

This is a great place to have local fish. Their speciality is freshly caught local fish (hence if the sea is rough, the restaurant is closed). They don't have any meat dish but have good standard Japanese dishes (deep fried chicken and tofu) which were among the best I had in Japan. The only downside is they don't serve sake - Yakushima is a place for shochu. They have however homemade 'sumomo' drink which was very nice. It is very easy to drink but quite strong so be careful!
We spent 3 nights in Yakushima so we tried quite a few restaurants, including all those ranked high on Tripadvisor. We found this restaurant to be the best. It's a small restaurant but when we went for lunch, we had no trouble getting a table. We had their flying fish set lunch, tonkatsu set lunch and their broken-neck mackerel sashimi as a side. All 3 were delicious. Way better than the #1 ranked Shiosai and more reasonably priced too. The broken-neck mackerel was so good; I have never seen them outside of Yakushima. Unfortunately, we ate there on the last day, which was a bummer because if given a chance, we probably would have eaten there all 3 days!

This place has delicious karage, very crispy and big pieces and for an additional price you can make it a set to get tofu, miso soup and rice. The restaurant opened a bit early just so we can have dinner there. Excellent service

Really enjoyed the meal at Shiosai. I had the sashimi and tempura set meal and it was delicious. Since I ordered from the set menu, it came with miso soup, steamed egg custard and rice. There was a lot of food. Everything was delicious and it was fun sitting in the tatami room. If you want good food, you should come here.
