We have had the outstanding Hotel L'Escale as our go to hotel for overnights to and from the ferry for decades now but generally eat in Calais as the restaurant across the road associated with the hotel (but not owned by it) generally shuts up shop quite early and we like to linger over an evening meal. The exception is when we are in Escalles on a Friday / Saturday when the restaurant du Cap is open. This year our holiday arrangements were such that we had two Saturdays in Escalles, so ate at the du Cap twice, and for the first time in two years. First time round we mixed and matched the very good â¬25 and â¬33 menus and shared the dessert and cheese courses. The latter reminded us of the fact that the restaurant du Cap still provides that fast disappearing treat in France - the proper full cheese board on a trolley. So on our return visit we went a la carte with an excellent steak "a point", then the cheese board for both of us (Chaource, Maroilles, Mimolette, etc) and two lovely café gourmands. On both occasions we drank the red pichet wine which was astoundingly good for the price.Whereas eating at the hotel restaurant (which we have also done in the last year) tends to be taking on fuel, the restaurant du Cap is always a real dining experience and much preferred, with the downside that the restaurant only appears to be open in the evenings on Fridays and Saturdays.

A tuesday night in March, we had booked a table for 7.15pm and when we arrived we were the only customers in the restaurant. Only one other couple entered during the entire evening we were there, so a lack of atmosphere.Service was entertaining. Madame spoke virtually no English and our GCE school French wasn't a great help - "La plume de ma tante" and "sur le pont D'Avignon" didn't really hack it. However we got by with a limited exchange of language and signs and Madame although a trifle eccentric was attentive. We had one of the set menus and the food was fine without being anything special. Nothing really to criticise but we left with a feeling that we could have done better. On our previous visit to Calais we ate at Le Channel, the restaurant next door, which is much better in our opinion.

La Mer restaurant in the midst of Calais most popular tourist area wears its culinary heart right on its sleeve. This warm, traditional restaurant the sibling of La Sole Meuniere serves nothing but fish and fruits de mer, including twelve different kinds
I have eaten here many times over the years, and the service has normally been much better than this. For some reason my card declined - the same card I have used all week, all over Calais ... no attempt to understand or be receptive, I was somewhat summarily dismissed when I asked if there was a problem. I paid cash, which was fortunate, as I did not carry very much - and left, probably not to return on my next visit. The food is good, but not great enough for this level of disinterest. Would be worth remembering that tourists are at the mercy of the financial elements as much as the restaurateurs.

In the main street of Sangatte (famous for its previous 'jungle' campsite) we came across this very lovely and welcoming restaurant. I tried the Moules in a cream sauce with tarragon 14,50 euros, my friend the Skate fish at 15,00 euros, both really good. A carafe of wine 500ml was ten euros. Recommended !Next time I'll make space for the incredible Fruits de Mer, it was on the next table and looked awesome!

We visited on a Saturday evening. We made a reservation (recommended!) and got a nice table on the first floor next to the window overlooking the ferries to England entering/leaving the harbour. The fish menu was excellent absolutely fresh. We spend eu70 for two three courses menus, apéritives and both a glas of Chablis. Highly recommended!
