Louis Trichardt or Makhado (formerly Trichardtsdorp) is a town at the foot of the Soutpansberg mountain range in the Limpopo province of South Africa. It is named after the voortrekker leader Louis Tregardt. It is the centre of the Makhado Local Municipality, which comprises 16,000 km² with a total population of 270,000 (2001). Louis Trichardt is located in a fertile region where litchis, bananas, mangoes and nuts are produced. The national road N1 runs through the town. Louis Trichardt is 437 kilometres from Johannesburg and one hour's drive from the Zimbabwean border at Beitbridge. Louis Trichardt was formerly known as Makhado, but it was changed back to Louis Trichardt. But now many people use the one name or the other. Vleifontein, Elim, Tshikota, Madombidzha, Makhado Park and Dzanani surround the town at all directions.

I have visited this establishment a couple of times, it never really lives up to the expectation. There is nothing spesific that I can fault. Some issues is that the steak is never as ordered. The tables can do with an extra wipe, especially later in the afternoon.
We had breakfast there a few times. I would rather recommend having breakfast if you want to support this establishment.

We were on our way to Zimbabwe and needed an ATM, so we drove into Louis Tritchardt. I noticed the attractive sign on the outside of Thando's and we stopped for lunch. They serve typical local fare - chicken, beef or chicken stew, pap (a form of corn meal served in South Africa), and a couple of other items I didn't recognize but which turned out to be a delicious creamed spinach and another was a shredded carrot side dish.
My husband and I both ordered the beef stew (they were out of chicken) and the sauce was delicious. The meat was tender, too - a lovely, tasty homemade stew that had been slowcooked to perfection.
We were the only tourists and the staff brought us plastic spoons, but all the locals were eating with their fingers so we did the same. They also deliver a tub of water and a clean towel to each table.
On our return from Zim, we were really looking forward to stopping again but got through the border crossing too late on a Sunday so we missed a repeat visit.
Prices were VERY reasonable. We paid R30 ($3 UDS) each for the full lunch and I couldn't finish everything on my plate.

Experience a truly South African dining experience at Nando's in Makhado. Our flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken restaurants are world famous for their succulent, grilled to perfection, butterfly-cut chickens. Add spice to your life with a meal from our Portuguese style menu. We've set the eating experience on fire and we can't wait for you to join our table because if there's one thing we love as much as PERi-PERi, it's lots of people to enjoy it with!
