Portimao is a sailor’s delight, thanks to its calm waters and beautiful conditions. Plenty of elite international competitions happen here, but you don’t have to be a professional to set sail. Cruising the coast on the double-masted Santa Bernarda pirate ship is a family favorite. On dry land, you can wander the lovely Alvor boardwalk, enjoy a succulent seafood meal or zip around the go-kart track at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

Just returned from a beautiful week in Portugal our first family holiday with 9 month old baby. Travelled with Tui package deal. Transfer from airport on arrival straightforward approx an hour no other pick ups. Check in was simple. No arrival drinks like previous reviews mentioned. Used the screens to book restaurants although timings were all quite late in evening, with the little one we needed to eat earlier, Tui rep advised asked at reception. Receptionist got us booked at all 3 resturants at 6.30/7pm perfect time for us with baby. Complex and grounds all lovely, nice buzzing happy family friendly atmosphere, high chairs in all restaurants, childrens play area. Splash pool not much shade and parasols have no fittings so not able to creAte shade for little ones. Hotel room standard family room, lovely rooms modern fresh clean and comfortable, cot made up on arrival for baby which was great, comfy mattress for cot better than standard travel cot, and was given a baby bath for the week (ask at reception) Small rooms, not much space to store clothes / unpack, no robes or slippers, but it was fine for us. Food is repetitive not much choice, but I think this is expected in Europe all inclusive. Piri piri resturant and surf and turf make a nice change to the buffet. Snack bar for ice creams / cakes good. Staff are polite and happy to give you anything on request, baby fruit pouches / yogurts. Not loads of food choice for baby who is still weaning, we took baby snacks and pouches. Beach a short walk away or pleasant train ride. Beach is stunning beautiful Algarve. Alvor is a lovely town with a marina and shops and restaurants. All in all we would recommend Pestana blue and would stay again, we had a great time and made lovely memories, don’t worry about the negative reviews, after all the lockdowns and covid it’s just lovely to get away again, and after all any holiday is what you make of it!

The Pestana D. João II is a is a 4-star hotel overlooking the sandy Alvor beach with calm, crystal clear waters. It is only 10 minutes on foot from the town centre, very close to the Alvor river. Take a dive into one of the 2 outdoor saltwater swimming pools surrounded by lush and peaceful gardens, or relax at the Spa with an indoor swimming pool, Turkish bath and sauna where you can schedule a Magic Spa massage. For your meals, there is 1 restaurant and 3 bars (2 of which only open in the summer). If you have kids, the Pestana Kids Club is the perfect place for them to have fun (open from June to September). All rooms offer a balcony with views of the sea (frontal or side), garden or hotel grounds and have a TV and Wi-Fi.
We stayed as a family of 6 for 4 nights and had a wonderful stay. Beautiful weather, hotel is immaculate, direct access to fantastic beach, great pool areas, nice mix of families, youngster couples and older guests … we couldn’t recommend this hotel highly enough

The Pestana Alvor Praia, an iconic hotel perched on the cliff above one of the best known beaches in the Algarve and with a stunning view over Três Irmãos beach, is a symbol of tranquility surrounded by elegance. The interior decor is beautifully inspired by the natural surroundings, which have determined the choice of luxurious furnishings. Combining several styles and respecting the characteristics of the hotel, they seek to create a timeless charm and elegance with a touch of contemporary modernism. New shapes, dimensions, colours and patterns create an unexpected and inspiring environment from the entrance of the hotel to its extensive gardens. Its proximity to the sea and its connection to the beach allow for a wide range of experiences to be enjoyed. Guests have 5 tennis courts and 8 golf courses to choose from within a 15 km radius. Thanks to its mild climate and low rainfall, the Algarve is the ideal place to practice outdoor sports throughout the year. The Pestana Alvor Praia is certified as CLEAN & SAFE by Turismo de Portugal.
This hotel is in a great location, being on a beautiful beach. The staff are all warm and friendly and will do anything to help. However they are let down by the ageing infrastructure. Our sea view room was tired and it became a joke between us how many bits of it fell apart or stopped working during our stay. Twice the water went off just as we were preparing to go out. The telephone didn’t work, the towel rail fell off and the sink was blocked. They also didn’t provide any free water (apart from on the first day), which I have never experienced before in a hot climate. Likewise only one shower cap and beach towel is provided during your stay, which would have been fine, if anyone had explained that to us when we arrived. The buffet breakfast is really good; both quality and variety. Overall I feel that Pestana Group needs to recognise the importance of value for money which sadly, we felt was missing here.

We are currently staying in these apartments and they are superb. Could not find one fault. The apartment is large well equipped and feels brand new. Cleaned every day and are spotless. Staff are super friendly. Location is amazing. Just minutes from main area. Alvor is really lovley and the choice of restaurants and good value is amazing. Ireland is gone so expensive it's hard to justify holidays at home. Can't wait to come back. Would recommend Salsa Bistro and Capacho restaurants . But there's loads and all so reasonably priced.

We have recently returned from a fantastic stay at the Penina Golf Hotel - 2 adults and a 12 year old. Having read some of the reviews prior to travel, I was a little apprehensive and wasn’t sure what to expect but we cannot fault the stay we had and I wanted to share some feedback which I hope is helpful. The hotel reminded me of a country club, it has an old world charm and is full of character and history. There’s even a piano and snooker table with royal connections. The gardens are beautiful and well looked after. Our room was very comfortable and clean with the amenities we needed - hairdryer, nepresso machine and capsules (replenished daily) and complimentary water on arrival. We had a pool / golf course view which I highly recommend. It was quiet on the balcony - lovely to hear the birds. The pool area was also quiet during our stay - it felt like a spa at times! No bother getting a sunbed at any time of day. I was worried the huge pool might have been too cold for the beginning of June but it wasn’t. We enjoyed swimming and the pool area is well kept and clean. The pool attendants were very attentive in tidying up. We are not golfers so I can’t comment on the course but we did use the tennis courts - easy to book and access. There’s a fitness / walking trail through the golf course which we really enjoyed. It’s about 3 miles in total and takes you through the pine and eucalyptus trees. Lots of wildlife and a real treat at the end…..when you get to the “Championship hole 14” sign, there is a pond with a bridge and to our surprise, the pond is full of very friendly turtles!! Lovely walk after breakfast. We really enjoyed breakfast and the selection is fantastic. Everything including English and Continental items, an omelette chef, pastries, a fantastic fruit bar with nuts, seeds, dried fruits and freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. We never left hungry! We ate in the Sir Henry Cotton bar twice and both times we really enjoyed our meal. We also ate at the pool bar and at Dunas - the hotel beach club restaurant. The beach club and free shuttle bus actually opened on 1st June. Sunbeds are free for hotel guests and towels are there too. There’s a timetable for the shuttle to/from the beach so easy to plan your day. We had a hire car as we love to explore and if you don’t have a car, you’ll need to taxi / bus to Alvor. Free parking for cars right outside the hotel entrance. We found the staff to be so lovely, helpful and friendly. Ana was very welcoming on arrival and helped me find some lost sunglasses on our last day. Special mention to Joao in the Sir Henry Cotton bar on the first evening when we arrived late and to Joao and Naimul in the breakfast room, who were super friendly each morning and very quickly knew our drink preferences which was a lovely personal touch. Pedro was also very helpful on the front desk and so were many others but I don’t know everyones names! Yes, the hotel could benefit from a lick of paint externally but did it affect our stay, absolutely not. We loved the charm of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. Missing Penina already. Thank you for a wonderful holiday! It’s just what we needed.

Stayed here from 31st may for 1 week as a family of 4.First impressions of hotel were very good,it’s a big place with a very modern feel about it.We stayed in room 380 and again first impressions was very good kids had there own room and we could separate ours by a clever wardrobe door if wanted.Room had 2 tvs, kitchen with hob, modern bathroom with bath/shower.The balcony was huge with pool and sea view. There is a safe but you had to pay quite a lot for it which we didn’t bother doing. After unpacking we headed to the pool.It is massive and never a problem to get sun beds.we didn’t find it cold at all like other reviews only initially when you first get it but that’s the same everywhere. We ordered drinks at pool bar staff very good and friendly. This is where the hotel is let down the drinks are poor quality and they taste cheap. The cocktails are out of a machine and for me were dreadful as was the beer.Food in hotel I found quite poor for supposedly 4 star hotel and very very much the same day and night.Worst part was the coffee for breakfast even this tasted of hot chocolate I complained but every machine tasted the same.Pancakes were raw could not eat them.Don’t get me wrong we found something to fill our belly but nothing to say wow that was lovely just bang average food.Alvor is a nice place we ate out at various restaurants 3 nights and the food we had there was amazing.Definitely recommend slide and splash water park it was great fun as was our boat trip with 5emotions (on reception desk) to see dolphins and caves. If the food and drink improved here would be a good hotel.Entertainment wasn’t all that tbh was not much for singers found it bit boring as did the kids. When the entertainment team did a show it was much better and enjoyable. The magic show was good too.Not the worst hotel I’ve stayed but definitely not the best either
