Beautiful beaches off a quiet, dirt road. Easy to get to and worth the trip. Some days you will have the beach to yourself. Soft sand for walking.

A luxury boutique resort.
It had been 17 years since I first came to Eleuthera, so I was interested to see what changes took place. Since my first trip, I had taken about seven trips to the Abacos, which became my favorite area, particularly Hope Town, which I liked for its blend of gentle activity, nice restaurants, peace and quiet, and nice beaches - all within easy access by bike or golf cart. Since Hurricane Dorian, I've puzzled over where to go, and I remembered French Leave Beach. While I would say Eleuthera has overall improved since my last visit, it still doesn't quite match the overall feel of Hope Town. However, it does NOT disappoint when it comes to beaches, and French Leave epitomizes them. Its long, uncrowded, level sand met by truly beautiful water is probably about a nine out ten on my list. I like ocean-side beaches, where you can get over your head and that have a little surf. I would say Harbour Island's beach may be slightly more ideal in the sense that there's fewer reefs offshore, though some may like these for snorkeling. I also discovered the beach on the ocean side just north of the Governor's Harbour Airport entrance, which may be my favorite. I was almost the only person there all day, and the surf was lively and the color of the water stunning. I found with all of the beaches that a lightweight long-sleeved shirt was ideal, both for protection from the sun and the flies, which didn't bite but were a nuisance otherwise. This was some of the best February weather I've had in the Bahamas, usually about 78 in the day, with warm sunshine, though quite breezy - and always humid! The evenings were pleasant about 70 or just below that. Overall, the beaches are the draw in Eleuthera, but the people are very nice and there are a decent number of good restaurants to make it an acceptable substitute for Hope Town.
