The Roatan Institute for Marine Science (RIMS) is ideally located for marine study on the northwest coast of Roatan where over 30 miles of fringing and barrier reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and shoreline are home to an astonishing profusion of life. Founded in 1989, the primary objective of this facility is the preservation of Roatan's natural resources through education and research. In the past decade RIMS has established itself as a dedicated teaching institution. Our facility is visited year-round by colleges, universities and high schools from abroad to study tropical marine ecosystems and the bottlenose dolphins we house at our facility. Many programs are for academic credit, some are in conjunction with other field research stations, and others are simply introductory courses to the ecology of coral reefs in the Caribbean.
Being fortunate to have experienced dolphin encounters in various locations, I was excited to go to the next level with the Swim and Snorkel package. IT WAS GREAT! After starting with 30 minutes of what I'd consider a typical dolphin experience (touch, get a kiss, photo opp, some trickst) we progressed to another 30 minutes swimming with a large group of dolphins - even including a mother with her young. Considering we learned these dolphins are in the 400+ pound range, it was an experience I can't even fully describe - filled with awe as they would approach us in small groups, or one-on-one. Our guide was experienced (12 years) and both fun and educational. Due to the decline in tourism we also benefited from being in a very small group for a wonderful, personalized experience - my party of 3 and 3 others. Now is the time to come support the island and experience this for yourself - you won't be disappointed!

My boyfriend and I came here when we stopped here on our NCL cruise. We LOVED it. We want to plan a trip to stay here for longer than a few hours. It did cost us a fee to get into the resort (day pass) but we got to use facilities and close access to food and the bar. The service was great. Chairs and umbrellas were included. The beach is private. No locals were selling things along the beach. Not many people came here either. It was so nice! Absolutely beautiful. A little ways from the cruise port and we over paid for the taxi by a long shot. It should have only cost us a few bucks there and a few bucks back. Overall, it was a great experience there.
