The Warsaw Riverfront and trail system has continued to grow by leaps and bounds the last several years! Through the unique trail system that runs along the Osage River/Lake of the Ozarks the City has linked 3 major parks, creating a linear park along this scenic waterfront area that has beautiful views of the Ozark Hills, bluffs, lakes, and greenways!

Most people come to the many areas on and around Truman Lake to fish and relax. It's a great place for both, but my friends and I come to look for birds. Shorebirds, waterfowl, nesting warblers, viireos, tanagers, etc., may be found at many places around the lake, and the Missouri Department of Conservation access points make it easy to see places lakeside...usually. In this summer of 2019 the normally 50,000 acre lake is at flood stage, covering 200,000 acres. Many parts are inaccessible. Still, birding and sightseeing around Truman Lake is rewarding. If you're planning to visit several points by land, even at normal pool level many access points are far apart by gravel roads that reach points along this sprawling lake created by damming river and creeks.

Clear waters, dramatic bluffs and vibrant summer and fall colors make Harry S Truman State Park an ideal place to vacation. Located on a peninsula, the park offers a marina, ample fishing and boating opportunities, and water that’s perfect for every kind of swimmer. Hiking trails, picnic areas and campsites that dot the park’s open oak woodlands, natural grasslands and lakeside areas let visitors enjoy the abundance of wildlife and recreation opportunities at this expansive park.

We planned to stop here for a brief rest and a picnic on a recent road trip. It turns out that this was a FREE and unexpected highlight of the trip. There are very interesting exhibits detailing the actual creation of the dam, and native wildlife and conservation informational displays as well. Also, the upper level viewing area was fantastic. We ended up spending several hours there, and enjoyed hiking through the outdoor trails and "olde town" area set up for exploring. Very scenic picnic area. Wonderful surprise.
