Famous as the home of Yankee Stadium, elevated trains, and dense apartment blocks, the Bronx is also the greenest of New York City's boroughs. Visit the gorillas at the famous Bronx Zoo or wander through the 50-acre forest at the New York Botanical Garden. Pick up some gourmet foods on Arthur Avenue, the Bronx's Little Italy, and have a picnic at Van Cortlandt Park, which features two square miles of boating, horseback riding, tennis, and the oldest public golf course in the United States.

This museum is located in a public school that was built on an old Indian burial ground.
City Island Nautical Museum, formerly P.S. 17, is a very special place to me and my family. My father was born on City Island and lived in the back of his family's laundry business, the only Chinese family at the time in the 30-40s. He had the ultimate City Island experience growing up, swimming, fishing, boating...and attended P.S. 17 with friends that lasted his entire lifetime. It was so cool to go to the museum and sit in school desks imagining those times. The school room also displays class photos through the years and I found my dad in a photo framed on the wall! How cool! One of the museum's curators knew my dad personally and came to his funeral. She brought copies of his old school photos. It was so wonderful and personal (thank you Barbara!). The museum does a great job of preserving the history of City Island. Currently, there's an exhibit about the bridge and my Dad's best friend's hand drawing of it is featured. I haven't visited this year yet but I can't wait. Am hoping the museum will continue to do well and I look forward to bringing my future children to a place they can learn about their ancestors!

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is an internationally recognized cultural destination that presents innovative contemporary art exhibitions and education programs and is committed to promoting cross-cultural dialogues for diverse audiences. Since its founding in 1971, the Museum has played a vital role in the Bronx by helping to make art accessible to the entire community and connecting with local schools, artists, teens, and families through its robust education initiatives and public programs.
We loved the show about graffiti and Henry Chalant. What an excellent setup - loved the combination of music of the time, the moving images and sounds of the trains (oh how I remember!) and the journals, poems of artist, the photos. Also wonderful video showing the original artists all grown up now and reflecting on their experiences. Top notch show and a wonderful community resource. And free! Amazing.
