Restaurants in Alamos
Unfortunately, my friend and I saved the best for last. Not well-advertised, we didnât find Dona Lolaâs with its authentic, homemade Mexican fare until our last day in Alamos. We ate breakfast at a restaurant that is well advertised and has the best reputation in town. We were discussing a return for dinner when a snowbird and her husband overheard our conversation. âDonât come back here,â she said. âHave you been to Dona Lolaâs? Itâs our favorite place; all homemade and so much better than dinner here.â They gave us directions and we made our plans. My friend resides in Arizona, visits Mexico often and, cooks and eats Mexican food routinely. She speaks Spanish as well.Tucked away on a side street in a Mexican barrio, Dona Lolaâs is short walk from the plaza and the church which comprises the center of Alamos. We came upon what was once a home, now converted to a restaurant. We seated ourselves on the raised deck outside, the tables situated with picnic style seating and covered with oilcloth. Our hostess mixed a little English in with her Spanish. We started with the best chips and salsa that we had experienced in our two weeks in Alamos. The chips were crisp and fresh with just enough salt; the salsa just red and spicy enough. We asked about chips-to-go and the hostess wrapped up both chips and salsa and for a nominal price, we enjoyed a tasty snack in the car on our trip home the next day. For a main course, I ordered Mexicana Plata. Our waitress explained that the plate contained an enchilada, a chili relleno, rice and beans. My friend describes chili rellenos as the benchmark of Mexican cooking. âIf you can cook a good chili relleno, you are a true Mexican chef.â I declared my chili relleno delicious. She tasted it and declared it the best sheâd had in Mexico. The enchilada was tender, easily cut with a fork and stuffed with a rich cheesy filling. My friend who eats a light supper, decided on the Sopa De Pollo Con Arrozâchicken soup with rice. She enjoyed a rich broth, with large chunks of tender chicken, a plethora of vegetables accompanied by homemade flour tortillas, again the best weâd had on our trip. A ring of limes surrounded the soup and added to its flavor. The dinner prices were the most reasonable in Alamos. We hated to leave and wished we had run into the snowbirds and Dona Lola on our first day instead of our last.

I have visited this restaurant the past two Thursdays for pizza night. Pizza was just ok but this is Mexico. Margaritas are great but again this is Mexico! Service a bit slow and long wait for a pizza. I have not tried other menu options but I will. Same owner and chef as Charisma , nice atmosphere.

We went and enjoyed an excellent Thanksgiving dinner at Santiago's Restaurant. It was simply amazing again as always. As a family, we enjoy this meal every year. From the shrimp appetizer to a traditional Turkey dinner. And to top it all off with a piece of pumpkin pie in Mexico! Thank you Jim and Nancy; Ramon and Jamie for another wonderful experience at the Hacienda de los Santos Santiago's Restaurant.

Our friend wanted us to have a meal here as she had become friends with Joseph in an art lesson in Italy. What a wonderful experience. The restaurant is beautifully lit with three dimensional metal stars hanging from the ceiling & wonderful pieces of art around. That set the stage for a delicious meal of Filet Mignon & a great glass of red wine.
