Only found out about this restaurant by accident, so decided to try it. I've been to the sister restaurant, Tasca Dali, so, despite some negative reviews, I thought I'd try it as it is run by the same management so it must have the same standard. Tasca Dali has just won the title of best Spanish restaurant in West Midlands, so it must be doing something right! The management and staff were so friendly, polite and informative that I do not understand the very low ratings. Yes there were a couple of hiccups, (one wrong drink due to a new waitress, and the starters taking a little longer than normal), but the quality of the food, (with apologies and no excuses for the mishaps), made up for any slight hiccups.Nothing was too much trouble. Even paella, (which they say on their website needs 24 hours notice), was available which we took advantage of.We had starters off the tapas menu, (bread with alioli, black pudding and calamari), with the oriental calamari the stand out dish. It sounds like an odd combination, but whoever thought of it is inspired as it takes calamari to a completely new level, and not so much oriental but a slight spicy kick. The chicken paella was so moist and tender, with just enough crunch without being burnt. The best outside of Spain. I'll definitely try the seafood paella next time.In summary, I do not know what the negative review expect, but I absolutely had a great evening with staff that could not be more polite and attentive.

The selection of dishes was very good, the restaurant recommended five dishes per couple and they were right. We were there with friend so chose ten dishes, the problem was deciding which ones not to have. There was a reasonable selection of wines and beers. The service was very attentive and helpful and overall a very enjoyable experience.

Tasca Dali

Reviewed By TheCummingses

I contacted Alex on Saturday 14th Sept via text to book a table for my husband’s birthday the following Thursday after a recommendation from some friends and from reading all the wonderful reviews. I wanted to make sure that Tasca Dali could cater for us as four non-meat-eaters as I understood we wouldn’t be dining a la carte. I explained we were mainly vegetarian but were happy to eat fish and seafood when dining out. Alex came back to me quickly to confirm ‘of course’ they could cater for us and, having seen the wonderful photos of lobster and mussels on their TripAdvisor page, I didn’t doubt this. I told him that it was my husband’s birthday and, as we wanted to enjoy their dessert rather than bringing a cake, I asked if he could acknowledge my husband’s birthday with a candle in his dessert or some other small gesture. Again he came back quickly with ‘of course’ and the booking was confirmed via email. On arrival at the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly waiter who let us choose where we wanted to sit. He was warm and chatty and the ambiance was lovely even though there weren’t many diners in at this point. We selected a wine from the interesting wine menu and I then checked if he had us down for veggie/pescetarian food. He enquired if it was just one of us and I said no, it was all four. He said okay, he would let the chef know, which I thought was strange as they should have already known. He brought out the first course which was a sharing platter. This consisted of bread, manchego cheese, olives, dips, boiled potatoes and sliced tomato drizzled in olive oil. He explained that as we couldn’t eat the meat on the platter that they had substituted it with potatoes and tomatoes. The cheese, olives and dips were very good, but the potatoes and tomatoes were very plain, nothing special at all. The next course, the waiter explained, was meant to be a chorizo and lentil stew but as we couldn’t eat chorizo we had the vegetarian version which was a bowl of very salty lentils with a few carrots in it. I am a big fan of lentils but I’ve never eaten them on their own before. My husband was the only one who managed to eat them, they just tasted of salt and lentils and just a couple of mouthfuls made my heart start to pound! The next course was a swordfish steak served with a creamy sauce and grated carrot on the top, which was fine. Next we had paella, which the waiter told us should have had chicken in but the chef had made ours without. Unfortunately, they didn’t replace the chicken with anything else. I thought that paella was usually chicken and prawns (or lobster from the photos?), so we would at least have got some prawns and vegetables with our rice or maybe some tofu, or fish or almonds?? Instead we got a pan of rice with a few slices of roasted red peppers. Finally, dessert came and it was a glass of a lemon mousse-type composition which was very nice, but there was no candle or birthday message on my husband’s plate or any kind of gesture to make it special. I’m sure if the waiter had been told it was my husband’s birthday he would have said something, but he seemed to spend less and less time conversing with us as he brought out each course, probably out of embarrassment for the food he was serving us.As we had eaten the same dinner as the meat eaters but without the meat, I half expected that we might have been given a discounted rate, but no, when the bill came it was still £30 a head. We paid the bill and left the waiter a 10% gratuity as we had no issue with his service. We didn’t complain about the food then as a) it was my husband’s birthday and we didn’t want to spoil the mood by moaning about the food and b) the staff clearly hadn’t been told about our dietary requirements and were probably trying their best to accommodate us at very short notice with the ingredients they had at their disposal.I texted Alex the following morning to tell him how disappointed I was by our meal, especially as I had arranged the booking 5 days before. He said he was sorry to hear that and he apologised that he couldn’t be there on the evening as he was travelling for his son’s birthday. He said he would get back to me when he had spoken to his team and I have heard absolutely nothing since. This is not the kind of customer service I would expect from a reputable, local business. Loved the ambiance and the wine but am very, very disappointed with the food and I feel embarrassed that I took family there for a celebration dinner :(Are you aiming to win the Booker prize for the longest Trip Advisor review or in the era of impeachment do you plan to publish a transcript of our phone call? I shall keep the response as short as I can for our readers' sanity while trying to address this rant. First, you erroneously say that we do not cater for non meat eaters when that cannot be further from the truth. We cooked a paella only for your group and gave you all non meat options. Second, all our people will always check on the day if there are any specific food requirements. This is independent of the instructions we receive and is designed as a secondary check especially as there are people who often forget to tell us about food allergies. It is our risk management and due diligence, sorry you do not approve. Third. it just seems for me that you are fishing for a discount , your sentence...' as we had the same as the meat eaters but without the meat ' is the real the give away ! In all my years I have never encountered such an incredibly brazen way to request you pay less...unbelievable. I repeat, you had a paella cooked for you ESPECIALLY. You want it to have lobster in, do you ? Well, that at today's market price is £45 and you would like that on a 5 course set menu where you pay £30?And while we are at it, perhaps I shall just open a food charity and give everything away. Fourth, candles are mousse do not really go together...it is a sinking thing , like the feeling of your review. Candles and kids ok, mature guys a nice touch - we often do it dessert texture permitting - but I really doubt that a mature man will be overly distraught over not having a candle. Maybe I am wrong? Fifth, you should feel embarrassed, embarrassed for publicly trying to strong arm us into refunding you the meal and money....horrible is an understatement.

We showed up at LA MESA with a friend from Canada unannounced and without a reservation mid week. Gerry's LA MESA is getting so popular that he was overbooked on a WEDNESDAY NIGHT!!! Gerry is a top man so he had his front of house named Diana open up his terrace so we could enjoy the food with his other guests. The menu was chorizo with cheeses and breads, serrano wrapped vegetables, brioche with truffles, and a spanish filet steak. Gerry is a genius who creates amazing food every time. Do yourself a favour - make a reservation and go.
