Reykjanes Lighthouse

If you want to explore Reykjanes Peninsula, which I highly recommend, you should add Reykjanes Lighthouse to your itinerary. The area was filled with lupines when we visited in early June. Such a beautiful sight! Walk up to the lighthouse for a beautiful vantage point of the ocean. You can then drive towards the coast and explore that area.

Garoskagi Lighthouse

We had a couple of extra days on a layover and stayed in Keflavik (the Berg hotel is the big draw for us). Having explored much of Iceland, we decided to just poke around the peninsula. First stop was Gardur and it's museum and light house. Beautiful pictures here. Then down the coast to Sandgerdi and another photogenic lighthouse. We should have continued down to Stafnes but instead swung back through Keflavik to go down the southern route through Hafnir. Down here you will find amazing cliff views of basalt and birds. One place that gets little mention and is somehow left off of maps is the Valahnúkamöl area and the Valahnúker Mountain and Cliffs. it is just off of route 425 there are information displays about the Great Auk (the last of which perished on Eldey Island that can be seen offshore) and a cool statue commemorating that last Auk. Further along 425 there are more information displays about the volcanic activity and the mid-atlantic rift. The bridge between two continents is along this road as well. We ended this trip with lobster soup in Bryggyan in Grindavik before heading back to the hotel. But, if you have the time, there is a great walk from the east part of town out to the Hopsnes lighthouse. This is a great walk with information signs telling about the shipwrecks that have happened in the past. Fun half day !!
