We happened upon this small but wonderful restaurant while staying in Ueda as part of our WalkJapan tour. The tour guide said to "walk up the hill" and we would "find many restaurants". Easy for him to say, since he was fluent in Japanese! We felt a bit lost and abandoned. But we were hungry, so off we went. We accidentally wandered into a seedy part of town, complete with tawdry bars and tough looking characters standing about. We quickly turned back, uncertain of where to go.But then, shining like a welcoming beacon on a small side street, quite close to the train station and our hotel, we saw a large sign announcing the Trattoria Nonno. At the time, the name was Papa Orso. In small towns in Japan, English is not widely spoken. And we had only minimal Japanese. We were delighted when a waitress greeted us warmly in English. After several weeks of traditional Japanese fare, an Italian meal was just what we wanted. We really did not know exactly what to expect. Nothing had prepared us for the high quality of Italian restaurants in Japan. Of course, the Japanese are great noodle aficionados, so I guess Italian cuisine really makes sense. Also, the Japanese always seem to excel in whatever they endeavor, as we were quickly learning. The quality of French breads and baked goods in Japanese supermarkets and cafes rival the best boulangeries in Paris. Although we enjoyed several other Italian meals in Japan, Trattoria Nonno was a special place. We had the prix fixe dinner which included a delcious, fresh salad, a crisp and tasty wood fired Pizza Margherita, and a scoop of spumoni followed by espresso. We also enjoyed a bottle of the house wine, a first rate Chianti. Oishikatta! In the course of our leisurely meal, all three members of the wait staff wandered by our table to say hello and practice a bit of English. It was really quite fun. There were also many locals dining there, enjoying themselves. It is always polite, when leaving a restaurant in Japan, to say âGochisÅsama deshitaâ which means âThat was a feastâ. It will always bring smiles to your hosts. When we left, the entire staff gave us a surprisingly warm send off in the Japanese way, with many bows and expressions of gratitude for our patronage. We were replete in body and spirit.Trattoria Nono is a special place, with a first rate chef, a friendly and helpful staff, and delicious Italian food. Buon apetito!
