Things to do in Taiji-cho
Hotel correcto para su precio: habitación doble con dos camas separadas. Baño correcto. Nos dieron pases para el onsen de un hotel cercano lo que hizo nuestra estancia muy agradable. Buena relación calidad-precio.
We spent a couple of days in the port town of Nachikatsuura and couldn't miss the queues of people milling about outside of this maguro (tuna) restaurant on the corner, just diagonally across from Kii-Katsuura train station. In a town that might just be Japan's tuna capital - that's probably saying a lot.Another tell tale sign is the number of press clippings posted outside the restaurant, as well as photos of what we can only guess are Japanese celebrities who have come to eat at this place. On our final morning in the town, we knew we couldn't leave the area without trying the place out. The restaurant opens at 11am and already the clipboard of names that you have to fill in for a table was about 10 people down. We missed the first seating as we'd not figured out the system yet, but quickly put our names on the list to secure our seat. The place is a hole-in-the-wall establishment with about 5 tables that can seat no more than 16 people serving the house speciality of raw tuna in "tuna bowls" or tuna sushi - and the choice of some other cooked items like dumplings and cooked tuna.Judging from what people mostly order, they go for the house special tuna bowl that comes with different cuts of tuna on a bed of rice and a raw quail's egg on top.It was delicious and I'm a huge raw tuna fan ... but dare I say that a person can have too much of a good thing? Maybe because I get a lower grade of tuna where I come from, but I'm more used to sushi that's served a bit more chilled. Here in Kii Katsuura, the tuna market is less than 500m away and it is really fresh. But the fish is also served pretty much at "room temperature" which made me slightly queasy towards the end.It was still a great experience and I'd go to Oshokujidokoro Yamato again.

It's a bit of an OTT accolade to say that we had the best meal in Japan at what looks almost like a dive bar in the small port town of NachiKatsuura - there certainly was a lot of competition between Steakhouse Hinoki, Kyoto and later for us, Osaka.Perhaps it was the sheer exhilaration of completing the Kumano Kodo or the horrendous buffet-style feeding frenzy we'd experienced at our hotel at Urashima the night before, but an intimate dinner with no more than 9 other customers was just heavenly. We're not normally wagyu fans, preferring our beef grass-fed, but the 2 steaks we had were melt-in-the-mouth perfection. We also did a side order of seafood and that was amazing as well. The chef (who spoke very good English) focussed his attention on the 2 hot plates on either side of him and calmly cooked everything to order. He's not fussed about getting as many customers as he can in an evening either - 2 other Japanese customers came in a bit later, but he told them he was full and done for the night and sent them on their way. So come early - he only does 1 seating per night and was already cleaning up by the time we were finished. We only stumbled across this place on our way from the train station to the harbour, but count our blessings that it turned out to be the best place to eat in this town.
