Probably Kabulâs best-known and trendiest expat venue (but currently closed), the Elbow Room is not only a restaurant and bar but also a place where you can constantly see two highly enthusiastic young Brits fighting with the everyday problems of capacity building â and quite successfully so. The place is not a training school for cooks or waiters (unlike the Deutscher Hof German restaurant), bur has managed during its short existence to produce a high number of highly skilled professionals in the industry â a badly needed commodity indeed. Well, not too skilled after all⦠especially when you see them working on inventory with tens of customers waiting in line, or when you pay to one waiter only to have another one think you are running away and chase you. But they are an amazing if rather unorganized team, dedicated to improving themselves and improving their already excellent service to customers. While the menu depicted the ElbowRoom salad as containing a poached egg, you were getting hard boiled eggs instead. But the helpful waiters, who have not been taught how to produce a poached egg (you might wonder why would someone write âpoached eggâ on the menu in the first place !), looked deep into it until they found the recipe for the perfect poached egg, with a deep sense of satisfaction as they would put in in front of a demanding customer. A waiter might not know what âal denteâ pasta is, but you can be assured he will get it for you. Capacity building is the core element of nation-building. And if you come to Kabul for the first time, at the Elbow Room you will see nation-building in the making: a serious capacity building exercise under the careful and highly professional supervision of foreign eyes. Plus of course a fully furbished bar with all kinds of spirits at reasonable prices, and a restaurant that can genuinely compete with a good British or American café â although you wonât find fresh seafood or particularly elaborate dishes, and the desserts selection is also rather poor. From Mexican tacos to mozzarella sticks and Norwegian smoked salmon, from the authentic Ceasar salad to the equally authentic Maja Blanca, from pasta (rather pricey and not âal denteâ unless you specify !) to the perfect steak, you are unlikely to be disappointed â just donât be too demanding over cold tacos or warm beer. For those on a budget, try lunch with fantastic burgers and sandwiches. And on a Friday, donât miss the brunch followed by buffet lunch (they actually seem to be the same thing but they are nominally separate) for a very reasonable $ 13, featuring a wide assortment of cold cuts, cheeses, salads and pickles, all cereals or müesli you might desire, and hot dishes including great meat, fish, and pasta. In wet or dusty weather (i.e. every day), you should either have a car with the right car-plate to reach the bottom of the narrow alley where the restaurant is, or laundry and shoe-polishing to remove mud afterwards: the guards are extremely strict and sometimes rude, and only certain types of cars will be allowed into the alley, let alone inside the gate. But when you do get to the Elbow Room, amidst the roughed surroundings of Kabul, you are bound to have a great time with excellent food and a very friendly environment.
