Once known as Totomi, one of the original provinces of Japan, the Enshu region of western Shizuoka Prefecture embraces the intersection of Japanese history and culture. At the heart of this fabled region stands the distinctive Katsuragi Kitanomaru. Created and developed by the Yamaha Group, this modern-day Japanese stronghold offers an extraordinary space in which to refresh and renew the human spirit from the demands of everyday life. This is Japan at its best, at a standard you may never have experienced before. It was born from the structure of an historical home, built by skilled craftsmen long ago and transported to this site. With attention to every detail, it has now been transformed into a place that combines traditional Japanese aesthetic ideals with discreet modern conveniences, creating a destination of unrivaled luxury and comfort.
We stayed here for one night as a means to break up a long drive on our long Japan road trip last Fall, and Katsuragi Hotel Kitanomaru was among the higher-end properties, not to mention one of the more unique ones , in the area. Going in, we were aware of the room size of the Deluxe Western-style Twin Room, aka "Fuji-dono," (28m², according to them), but were still (unpleasantly) surprised at just how claustrophobic and unappealing the room turned out to be. The windows were on the small side. And the combo shower/tub unit is definitely unbefitting of a luxury property that commands a rate that exceeds $500 per person per night. Even when factoring in the cost of the included dinner - which was very good - we felt the small rooms did not justify the big price tag. Yes, there are higher category rooms at Katsuragi, but the percentage of such rooms is very low... the vast majority are of the 28m² variety - best of luck finding availability of the larger rooms on your preferred dates.) It's especially disappointing when you consider the rest of the property. The grounds are expansive, immaculately maintained and has a remarkably quaint vibe. You can easily spend over an hour strolling the beautiful gardens and surrounding forest - it's definitely recommended. The outside entrance area is traditional Japanese (in a good way), and the lobby/reception area has liberal amounts floor-to-ceiling windows that offer commanding views of the beautiful garden and grounds. Clearly, a lot of thought has been put into giving Katsuragi a sense of place and space. Which is why the contrast is so jarring when being forced to stay in one of their non-suite rooms. To truly be a luxury hotel contender, they should think long and hard about reducing the number of rooms by half, and combining 2 adjacent rooms into one larger (but still not particularly large) suites. If that doesn't make financial sense, they they really ought to allocate a bit more space in their massive grounds to dedicate another wing to accommodate more guests. Food was definitely a highlight. It was fusion Japanese, and was unique and creative. Among the interesting small dishes: Muscat Grape, Japanese Turnip with Mashed Tofu, and Crown Daisy with Chestnut. That combination might sound weird and unappealing, but it worked. Very nicely, actually. The Softshell Turtle Soup from Lake Hamana was also a delight to our senses. And the Omi Beef Steak lived up to its billing - right up there with the best from Kobe, Tajima and Hida. And of the four excellent desserts, the Satsuma Sweet Potato Ice Cream absolutely blew us away. Service was friendly and attentive, if a bit on the formal side (in the old-school Japanese way.) Given that Katsuragi is a rather large property with more rooms than your traditional, family-run ryokan, the slightly impersonal nature is probably not a surprise. But overall, everyone worked to cater to our needs with quiet efficiency. Since we stayed for only night (not sure why anyone would feel the need to be in the area for longer than that), the small room didn't detract in any major way. However, because of the room size, we don't consider the Katsuragi is anything more than a stopover property that's (possibly) worth trying once, and only once.... unless, of course, they had a Suite room that was available. Otherwise, we'd search long and far to try a different place next time should we need to stay somewhere in Aichi in the future. P.S. - note that the Katsuragi primarily (if not strictly) caters do the domestic clientele. Actually, it might be targeted mainly for the local Aichi demographic, including golfers. Therefore, finding English-speaking staff members might be challenging, although we are unable to validate this assumption.

Ideal lodging for family. Ample space that is hard to find among Japanese budget hotels. The lodge is facing a busy road, but it is quiet. The lobby is equipped with DeLonghi coffee machine, hot water, and microwave. Washer/dryer on premise (need coins to operate). Good location to travel to/from Kakegawa and Iwata, especially if you are in the area for Ecopa events. Amenities are available with fees.

Stayed here 2 nights for close proximity to a conference. Located adjacent to train station, bus and taxi rank. Noise not an issue. The hotel is old, basic but agreeable for the price. The room is smallish, especially the bathroom. The bed is quite comfortable. Complimentary toiletries are good quality. Breakfast is included. It’s traditional japanese. Grandma in the kitchen is worth price of admission alone. Her enthusiasm is admirable. Proper machine coffee. There’s some good eating options within a few mins walk. And a terrific little whiskey bar run by lovely old couple. Situated down a side alley, if you can find it - follow small purple sign on main street.
