Exceptional, diverse, and fresh book selection including many Nebraska authors and a variety of viewpoints and voices. Extraordinary in a town this size. Local wine, foods, as well as teas and coffees...I was amazed to find all of this behind a nondescript storefront. No matter your tastes, you will find something here.

Located in Valentine, Nebraska—one of America's 100 Best Adventure Towns according to National Geographic—Broken Spoke Boutique is an adventure in and of itself. The boutique's building was originally constructed in 1915 as Nebraska State Bank and operated as such until the bank closed its doors in 1964. Over the next 50 years, as businesses came and went, so did the building's charm. Its beautifully crafted characteristics were covered up, including its tin tile ceiling, fir hardwood, and mosaic hexagon tile floor. Whitney Mayhew, a South Carolina native, moved to Valentine in 2016 and immediately recognized the town's charm. Inspired by Charleston's beauty and architectural allure, she saw potential in the building and began to expose the features that time and the community had forgotten. Throughout the remodel process, Whitney made sure to utilize many elements of early twentieth century design and made it a priority to emphasize the workmanship of the era.
I went in looking to replace my broken sunglasses & left with two pair. The lady working was very nice. She gave me a tour of the store, told me her favorite products & also about the owners of the store. She is obviously very proud to be part of this business. She also gave me recommendations on things going on around Valentine & some places to eat. Luckily (for my debit card) my husband & pooch were outside waiting for me so I picked up a couple more things & got out of there. Definitely could have spent some quality time in there

Prairie dogs, antelope and buffalo are some of the animals that can be spotted at this wildlife refuge.
A definite must that only takes 30 minutes max. Outside Valentine Neb, on the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge is a great walking path down to Fort Falls. Very pretty easily accessible. But does require stair climbing. Turn off at Fort Niobrara launch and drive back towards the Visitor Center. Just follow the signs for the Falls. Once there at the trail head, take the trail down to the Falls. It is a combo of stairs and paths. Continue past the falls and you are at the river. A great find!!

The bridge is part of the longest rail to trail conversions in the country. It gives a great vantage point for the Niobrara River and the amazing scenery that surrounds it. It’s a nice little hike.

A very special bridge to observe and read the plaque and information panel. I walked across the bridge and got some great photos.
