The oldest university in the world isn’t Oxford or the Sorbonne—it’s the University of Al-Karaouine, and you’ll find it in Fes el Bali. This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will transport you back to medieval times. Visit the ancient maze-like quarters of the Medina to Fes el-Bali and the four imposing Gates of Fes, with their distinctive Moroccan tile work. Place Seffarine

Reviewed By HINAWASEEM - Islamabad, Pakistan

This photogenic triangular square is located near the Kairaouine Mosque in Fes El Bali. You can hear this square before seeing it as it is filled with dozens of metalworkers or dinandiers pounding their hammers. There are metalware shops, a school for coppersmiths and Madrasa Seffarine here. You can buy copper decoration pieces, pots and dishes, drums and Morocco’s iconic copper lanterns.

Souk el Henna

Reviewed By HINAWASEEM - Islamabad, Pakistan

This Souk is located in Fes old Medina, just off Souk el Attarine. It is a peaceful square in the bustling Medina. Unlike other concrete alleys you can see several trees here. You can find henna, kohl and traditional balms stalls here. This square is connected to the oldest and largest mental asylum of Fes called Maristane Sidi Frej. This place was also unique because it used musical therapy to cure the patients. It is a good place to buy herbs, olives, pottery and musical instruments.

Chouara Tannery

Reviewed By Travelingourworldwck - Indialantic, United States

Chouara Tannery - Built in the 11th century, it is the largest and oldest tannery in the city - it has a strong smell, why? Well, they use the dove’s feces to remove the hair of the cows and lambs. For Camels and Goats they don’t and Camel leather is the most expensive leather here, it’s said to last a lifetime, the color doesn’t change, it’s waterproof and fire resistant. They use donkeys to transport the leather into the Medina for processing. You will see some of the process in my pictures, it’s all manual labor.
