As we understood, this wonderful cosy and stylish restaurant, part of De Kloof Luxury Estate, is already in it's third season. 18ZeroOne is for us a hidden gem in Swellendam. We enjoyed a wonderful a la carte dinner (4 choices for starter, main and desert) with several highlights. The place was intimate, with candle light and a fire place. As a starter we had the trio of South Africa: ostrich and springbok carpaccio with a shot of biltong soup, a mouthwatering experience.Main: a seared salmon with local Masala spices and fresh green asparagus. To top this we chose the strawberry cheesecake which a selection of local Swellendam berries and a young berries liquor, a speciality of this area. The restaurant has a good selection of award winning wines from the local Robertson wine valley.A wonderful evening, nice staff and we were informed that they will introduce food & wine pairing events shortly. Something to definitely look forward to.Thank you very much for a wonderful dining experience. We will be back!

Itâs a passionless restaurant with an aggressive owner who is not concerned about customer satisfaction. We were the only 2 people in the restaurant. My first mistake was asking for the heater to be turned towards me as the venue was freezing. This already provoked and upset him. Then, the waiter got our order wrong, After I explained 3 times what I wanted. A medium fillet, with pepper sauce on the side. I would think quite easy to execute. I got served a filet with mushroom and blue cheese sauce poured over it. I called the owner and explained what we requested and I didnât make an issue of it as we were trying to have a romantic dinner. He took my plate away and a few minutes later I got served a cremated steak with my pepper sauce on the side. Trying to keep focused on romance I chewed this returned steak and told the waiter I wasnât happy, but wasnât going complain as we were trying to enjoy our evening. Given the atmosphereless setting we decided to rather pay the bill and go back to our accommodation. At no point did the owner come check in us again nor did the waiter offer any form of compensation like a coffee or desert. To our surprise we were presented with a bill, INCLUDING a 10% gratuity! This really disturbed me. There is no policy saying that itâs a standard charge and given the circumstances I did not deem it appropriate to be forced to pay it.When we called the owner over I explained everything to him that happened. He did not appreciate being SPOKEN TO BY A WOMAN and kept responding to my partner. I kept insisting that Iâm the one complaining and he must Talk to me. He made a statement to us that we are TYPICAL EUROPEANS who always complain and do t want to pay gratuity. He also admitted to serving me the SAME STEAK after rinsing it and refiring it. He blamed the waiter for getting it wrong and when I told him as the owner her is accountable he just got more angered. The poor waiter clearly has not been trained, and probably lost his job because of this.....which is what I would expect from this kind of man. So I suggest there are many other places to go in this quaint little town, with passionate owners and chefs where you can have a much better experience. Your guest house will recommend De Vagebond, but he clearly doesnât like foreigners. The funny thing is I am Afrikaans and when I started speaking to him in Afrikaans he was even more angered that a women could address him about my concerns. This guy should get out of the restaurant business. Itâs not for him.
